but after reading the first post, I think pluto was asking if we have problems being proud of our respective accomplishments.

I always try to do everything correctly and completely.

But I am rarely proud of something I have done, unless it is a unique accomplishment. And often when people offer praise it seems to be for actions which don't seem to deserve praise.

What the term (or any word) means differs from person to person, and who's asking & who's answering.

Have trouble taking credit for my own work-how I mean is that the good things that have happened to me are just luck, not due to anything about me specifically, personally, individually. As if my positive qualities aren't things I can attribute to decisions I made-instead they are just "passive virtues". I don't vandalize property, for instance, because I don't have wish to do so-I can't take credit for resisting an urge when I never had the drive/impulse towards doing that action in the first place. Certain things aren't in my behavioral repertoire-didn't choose my likes & dislikes, temperament, personality, etc.

Also, I fear being pleased with something bc. that feels like an invitation to criticism/disaster (as compensatory bad luck befalling me, to balance out what I'd perceived/acknowledged as favorable event). Probably a general cultural hangup, relating in part to societal belief (however valid or not, in any given scenario) that it's safer not to draw attention to one's good fortune, lest one invite envy/resentment (and consequences) from someone else.

I almost never take pride in anything because I always feel like I could have done better, or that it was too easy to be worth thinking about. This applies even to things that I know are pretty good to have accomplished- like writing 100,000 words in a month for National Novel Writing Month- so I pretend to be proud of them and try to feel it but it just doesn't work. I always have the sinking feeling that nothing I do is ever as good as it should be.

Whenever I do something and I do it well, I feel pleased and do have a sense of pride. I do feel though that pride is something that is interpreted differently by everybody. I think some people feel that pride is connected with arrogance and being a bit up yourself. If you are going to be arrogant and up yourself, you don't necessarily need to be proud, although it does apply in some cases. I think you can feel a sense of pride in something you have achieved without being an arrogant, up yourself individual just by being happy about it, I do it sometimes and it feels great.

Yes, my friend, yes it does.

Same here. I've never been able to just accept a compliment without finding a "but." As in, "Thanks for saying so, but..."

Pride is yet another thing that is a tool - it depends on how it's used. On the one hand it can be used to keep your self esteem up, but on the other hand it can be used to be bloody arrogant.

I've done both - but I've only done the second in a tit for tat situation (the arrogance or showing off is done at me, so I give it back). I am passionate in what I believe and what I know, and one of the things I take the biggest pride in is telling the truth - either as I see it, or straight up fact. That's a very good way to get my back up - when I've told the truth and some idiot turns around and calls me a liar (or words to the same effect) or they accuse me of something I haven't done.

Pride is what keeps me going. Anyone who threatens that threatens my psychological life.

It is short lived, doing the hardest things, learning a lot, I get there, and see how sloppy my path was, so redo, and then do what I did right, sometimes the first gets noticed, about the time I am seeing the flaws, my path of errors, and no one ever sees the differance when I do it right.

I do take pride in I will do the next thing, no matter how hard, but it all turns out the same.

Life is more than I can master in a lifetime.
