It's not impossible to change a person.
It's impossible to change 6billion people in one try or even just 30 people in a class at school in one try, but not at all impossible to inform, to explain and thus provide one person at a time with a better knowledge. Only better knowledge actually provides a basis on which a person can reflect their own behaviour.
Everyone's so found of being able to speak, so they might as well make good use of it from time to time. For example, I've started giving around papers from the NAS of the UK (just because their infos are short but good). Before that, they wanted to say autism is just some psychological issue - now they know better, one person at a time.
But of course, I don't feel bad about using medical terms, using such words as 'disability'. I'm keen on presenting the bright side along with the diversity, all these aspects I am aware of that currently describe what 'autism' means to all kinds of people.
I'm not a great talker or anything, I get in trouble all the time, but nonetheless I find it rather easy to inform and explain about autism.
