I TOTALLY AGREE! Kanner's Syndrome sounds MUCH BETTER even though it is lower functioning!

It could be called Han's Syndrome, giving it a phonetic link with a cute parrot species, the Hahn's Macaw (Ara nobilis).

I would like a different name too. Some good suggestions here.

How about As-kann Syndrome or As-kann-burg-er Syndrome.

I really prefer Rainmanlite Syndrome.

But someone might translate "Psychopathy" as brain sickness!

Nerd syndrome
Geek syndrome
"We are Siamese, if you please," syndrome. (People with AS are generally thought of as being like cats, and Siamese have all the cat traits magnified.)

I'm very upset with the label "Asperger's Syndrome." And nobody had better tell us that by changing the label we would disrespect Hans Asperger. That's not true.

Kids with Asperger's Syndrome are violently bullied. Now let's look at some of the words and phrases "Asperger" reminds us of:

Asp
Booger
Ass burger

People with autism pick their noses and have toileting problems! Bullies will rip on children about this. Think about it: the buns. An ass burger. Is this some kind of joke? For God's sake.

I vote for a label change. "Autism with Verbal Intelligence" might work.

"Autism with Verbal Intelligence"

The problem with a tight label such as that is that it doesn't fit the spectrum. Nerd or Geek is generic enough to fit a wide swath of us and is recognized by most people as non-threatening. Most people today actually admire nerdiness a bit. After all, who wouldn't be willingto be a bit weird to become a billionaire?

When talking to people in the school district, "Asperger's Syndrome" is widely recognised and accepted. When talking to the general public, I just say "I'm a nerd." and let it go at that. I get about the same acceptance from each community, handling it this way. I had not thought to be more specific in the general community by specifying "Nerd Symdrome" until this thread showed up. hmmmm

Then again, "Autsim with Verbal Intelligence" suggests that autistic children with verbal delays can't be verbally intelligent.

The label "Asperger" is either God's genius or a sick joke.

How about just High Functioning Autism? IMO there's not much difference anyway.

Kids with Asperger's Syndrome are violently bullied.

And you imagine that began with the existence of the label?

I was 31 years old before the DSM-IV was even published. There was no Asperger's Syndrome in my youth. Yet still, I was indeed violently bullied. You see, label or no, we are different - and we can't hide it, because when we're young, we don't even understand why we're different.

Look, if someone's going to mock the name of the syndrome, they'd do that no matter what the name was. Changing the name won't change that. However, if you want a "majestic" name, let's go whole hog - GOD SYNDROME! :jester:
