I can well believe it, my children seemed to know more than I did as teens. I never used any really bad swear words in the house and would rarely swear now, but my goodness, you should hear one of mine swear, its horrible.

I think it depends. Profanity, in opinion, isn't a problem. I knew swear words even in first grade. So if I saw one in writing, it wouldn't faze me one bit. However, this is a family site, so it's better ot replace parts of swear words with asterisks (*'s). That way, there's enough of the word for people to know what it is, not it's not actually on the site.

Sex and violence, on the other hand, is a different story. Those should be kept to forums such as The Haven, the Adult Discussion Forum, as to a lesser extent, the Adolescent Forum. If kids (not teens) have been already exposed to such topics, then that's the harsh reality, but there's no need to make the exposure more that it already is.

Important question. I'm not sure there's a simple answer.

For example, suicide comes up now and then. Any sane person will find the idea of suicide more disturbing than those words that get censored, but you couldn't very well have an aspie board where nobody is allowed to mention suicide. It's a significant concern, especially among aspies.

We could say that references to suicide belong only in the adult section, but younger people sometimes kill themselves, and I think it would be better if they can talk honestly about what's going on in their lives and how they feel about it.

Looking back at my own life and the experiences related by others here, a lot of kids growing up as aspies are routinely forced to experience the absolute worst of human behavior. A lot of aspie kids aren't living in a fifties sitcom Leave It To Beaver world, where problems are trivial and they all get solved in half an hour.

Childhood can be really rough, and too many people trivialize the pain that children experience. They're not adults, but they are people.

I don't have a simple answer, but I think it involves a lot more than just vocabulary.

Sometimes I curse. I try not to be mean to people however.

Suicide is an ordinary word to most aspies; a word that is never far away. If people come to WP and find that disturbing then lucky them!

Not sure it could just go in an adult section because as you say, young people take their lives too. Maybe there could be a separate area though with a warning about content. Though doing that means that the real issues for us become hidden and I think that is a backward step, and really since the board is for us ASDs, should we, even here, have to hide away?

I don't have an answer, just throwing a few ideas in.

Yes, I do keep in mind that there are kids on WP and I try to respect this in my posts. Outside of the adult forum, which has an age limit, I try to avoid words and subject matter that parents tend not to want their children exposed to.

However, I also go by each thread and its subject matter, as long as the threads are clearly titled. And I use the site's rules as the ultimate guideline - it is the parent's responsibility to use these rules to decide if they want their child(ren) to use this site and under what amount of supervision.

Oh and i read earlier about the guy that thinks he should talk to 17yr olds the same as 5 years old and i think thatt is is offensive. Well i'm 16, (8 months till im 17 though yay i can drive At last!! !! !! !! !!) but why talk to someone as if they are a baby or something?
personally i try to talk to everyone as if there the same age. if you get my meaning.
So i think you should too.

Oh and if you want to talk about so called ' adult' issues, dont be dumb,
Just use the adult forum ,, DUH!! !

Well, from the idea of knowing about "adult" things, one of the first few books I read was about that. I wasn't even really talking about THAT. Still, I was simply saying that we should try to keep this clean even because minors are present!

Reread the post. Maybe I should have phrased it better, but I DID refer to the stuff as garbage, etc... and I DID make it clear that I was not talking about talking down to anyone, etc....

HECK, I wish the whole world would just forget all the swearing and profanity, etc... I wish they would forget the perversions. And NO, I am not talking about sex, life, or general knowledge. Frankly, some try to keep things from 2 year olds that I think should be fine for them! As for baby talk or eupemisms used for kids(Because that is how adults spoke to very young kids)? I don't know if I EVER used more than a few words, and I stopped that before I was 6. I wouldn't start again to talk to ANYONE like that!

As for suicide? It IS a nasty subject! Did you know that the popular series, MASH, has a theme song with WORDS that is called "suicide is painless"???? I guess the censors HATED it, because it had lyrics in the MOVIE, and the rarely seen pilot, but NOT in any other episode. The song is VERY clear! It speaks of a person contemplating their circumstances and asks "why me?". The refrain starts out "Suicide is painless, it brings on many changes..." The end says something like "And I can take or leave it if I please. And you can do the same thing if you please".

Anyway, suicide is something that is best talked about. People have to know they are not alone. A LOT of people here have tried suicide, and some succeeded. AGAIN, I am no stranger to that. If the old sleeping pills were still on the market, I would probably have died long ago. I'm not the type to slash my wrists though.

it goes back to maturity though. some people are maturer than others. And some people are more immature than others!! !! !!
Also because i can't view the adult forum for another 8 months,,, Lol, i am curious to as what is there? I think people do get curious if they can't view something! otherwise i wouldnt really care Lol.

You mean you actually had a live Aspie meet-up? ! ! Awww, I'd give anything to be there! I never met with aspies in real life. Was everyone from WP?

(Then again, I'm afraid that in a group of aspies I'd be as ostracized as anywhere else, and then I'd have to conclude that I'm a nuisance and AS was just my excuse!)

Yes, a real live aspie meet. It was posted on here and I believe everyone was from WP.

I doubt you would have been ostracized, I can be a little aloof/quiet/zoned out at times myself but my spirit was very much there and enjoying it immensely. There are at least three people that I can think of that are very outgoing, intelligent and have enough in the way of social ability and conversation to keep everyone included, so no, you would have been part of the group.

Is there a thread or photos? I'd love to see!

I've been there. BELIEVE ME! You aren't missing ANYTHING! There IS more profanity, and IS more perversion, but you will probably not find much you like. The social stuff is probably echoed somewhat in the general forum, and the normal stuff about sex, etc... is kind of drowned out by the other stuff. You are right about how exclusion creates curiosity, etc...

And who is to REALLY say how old you are? You could probably see it quickly if you felt it was THAT important.

I don't recall if I entered a birthdate but, when I do, it is always a bit off. After all, I don't REALLY know alex any better than he knows me. That is NOTHING against alex. I am that way on EVERY site that doesn't check. I give the webmasters only the information REALLY needed, or stuff I am not afraid to tell others.

I have been honest about my age, give or take a few years, but just not very precise. I think everyone realizes that. I probably gave out enough stuff that people could gather up posts and narrow it down to a 6 month span, but I guess they could find the info elsewhere as well.

I never found anything different in the adult forums contents from what there is on this board...
