Weirdly, I'm okay with eye contact. The guy who diagnosed me was surprised at how good my eye contact was, but it's taken years and years of practice to get to that point. I still sometimes forget to look at people when I'm talking to them, and sometimes I end up staring, but looking somebody directly in the eye doesn't cause any discomfort.

The last guy to train me for a dispatcher job took it as disrespect and a sign of weakness. He thought I was afraid of him when I was quite confident around him. I didn't know how to explain to him that I can't ALWAYS look someone in the eyes when talking. He thought it was something I could fix and it made me want to scream, lol. That being said, I do work on it, force myself to hold it for at least a few seconds, but nonetheless it's a part of me. C'est la Vie, I suppose.

most of the time, i look at other things or pretending im doing something to avoid eye contact. when i look at their eyes, i was trying to focus on their eyes that i forget what they are talking about, its a embarrasing situation especially if they are asking my opinion. when they do, i will be like, "huh? well okay",

that's one of the many reasons I took up Rubik's Cubing :D that way I can pretend that I'm watching what I'm doing. >.> which I really don't, but it saves me from looking at them :D

I have to do a class presentation at the university in 2 weeks. My lecturer thought it's a good idea that the rest of the students each have a scoring sheet to rate the presenter! One of the headings is Eye Contact! I am not good with talking to crouds, nor with eye contact and now the added stress of them consiously scrutinizing me.

Please, any advice will be appreciated. I heard you should just imagine that you are alone in the room but I can't focus on that idea, my speach, the overheads and eye contact at the same time.

ooo, I'm sorry :( I hate giving speeches. Perhaps you can talk to your instructor, and explain why this part of the presentation might be difficult for you.

eye contact is hard for me sometimes. it was extremely difficult when i was younger. i would get picked on for not having it when i thought i did.

as for public speaking i hate that too. does the old trick of picturing the audience in their underwear work for anyone? it is supposed to be calming. doesn't work for me.
. may be try looking at random peoples while u talk. as in looking in their directions.
as for me i got through it by picking a spot above the auidence and focusing on it while i stumbled through what i had to say. this is when i had to do it in school.
i got through it ok in school because i think they felt sorry for me.

Pretty much the same and because I am now aware of my poor eye contact skills, I am now distracted by what I may or may not be doing right :?

The eye contact page on wikipedia shows that people do think better when not looking at other people's face, I use that to justify my bad eye contact.
I never really put much notice in how much eye contact I make, but my parents told me I rarely look them in the eye. However, in very stressful situations like an oral examination (having a group discussion in English in front of a bunch of teachers), I look at anywhere but the other students' eyes.
When I was younger, I knew how to like... use my eyes to threaten people, I became so good at it that I was famous for my 'glare'. Now it doesn't work because I'd look ridiculous.
