Well, I'm not saying it's bad. But it's kind of causing me a lot of problems. Like in seventh grade I had a special interest in learning about Telekinesis. I thought the stuff was real, so I printed them out to show it to the class. They all laugh.

I would say that assessment is incorrect. In fact it doesn't even make logical sense, unless the interest in question is about a particularly disgusting subject. The fact is special interests perhaps the main thing that allows us to take our rightful place in the world. In my honest opinion without them, Asperger's Syndrome could not be leading the neurodiversity movement.

Id say that only goes to show that they werent completely grown up yet. Fine, most people might not be familiar with the subject and/or find it strange but most adult mature people ive met have never laughed in my face cause i have a certain interest. Grown ups might find it strange yes, eccentric maybe. But i havent been riddiculed as an adult.

Special interests are things I hold very dearly, so much that I require anyone I may be interested in dating to have those interests.

That’s not much different than the obsession I had with all things Art Deco and Art Nouveau when I was in high school. Anytime I had a chance to write a speech or write a term paper, guess what it was about. Almost all of my art projects for the Art courses I was taking would end up being influenced by my interest. When I would check out books at the local library, guess what they were about. I had the poor librarians worried that my obsession was an unhealthy one.

Yes, my teachers and classmates would make jokes at my expense, but I enjoyed immersing myself it my favorite interest. There is nothing disgusting about having an obsession with a special interest as long as it will not lead in doing anyone any harm.

Btw, my new obsession with straightening out my grammar has lead to me checking this post with a word processor and it turned out perfect.

See… See! My new obsession has turned out for the better.

Having a special interest is a part of giftedness as well. I wonder if that person would react the same way to a gifted kid with a special interest, or if they just don't like Aspies.

Yeah, but you can't MASTER those interests. Like you have an interest in football, you know the rules and how the game works, but when you actualy play, even after months of playing you still suck at it.

Maybe i sucked at football, but reading and learning stuff certainly has helped me in many ways. Like discovering aspergers. When i played wow i got darn good at that. I read tons of books before i had my baby (babies was an obsession for me, still is) and that helped me become a better mother. I learned how to edit videos in adobe premiere by reading and learning all by myself. So how can you say that?

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

Autism Speaks will NEVER speak for me

There are very few interests and obsessions you can totally master if you think about it, thats what makes them so wonderful. There's always more to learn and collect, I'll never have every film and every book about films and every film poster and every film toy etc. There are always more stamps being released, more books, more technology, new rules, new theories etc. Thats what makes it so fun :)

Do you have your bedroom floor littered with years worth of papers that you have printed out? I used to. I tend to clean up the floor pile every few years or so, and it makes me sad each time.

Why not get a filing cabinet and file the papers? Cleaning up your floor doesn't mean you have to throw the papers out.

I find my particular special interests fun and comforting. My cats, for example, are a great comfort to me.

My special interest brings me endless joy, it gives me something to talk about in social situations, it gets me out of the house, and I'm making a career out of it. How is that disgusting?

If any of my traits were to be called "disgusting" I'd vote for my tendency to neglect to have a shower.

Everyone has special interests. My mother likes gardening and home decorating. She is always watching those shows.

I like Benny & Joon and Spokane. I am also into our condition.
I have photos of Benny & Joon printed from the internet that are from the movie.
