In modern, civilized Western society, we really don't have nearly as much to fear as do people in some less developed or more war-torn nations or earlier epochs. Actually, we have more to fear from ourselves (meaning society in the collective sense)! For example, for most people in Western countries, driving is probably one of the most dangerous things they do, yet even many timid people aren't too afraid to drive.

P.S.: Lack of fear is a bad thing; sociopaths suffer from a lack of fear.

Holy crap, I remember that episode from years and years ago. It freaked me out as well.
