I mumble and slur daily. I have to make a focused effort not to, but sometimes it does not help.

I also flip words around in a sentence. Example, instead of saying "That tree over there has leaves," I might say, " That leaves over there has tree." This is kinda rare since the words move are so far apart in the sentence, but the closer they are in the sentence, the easier it is for me to do it.

Amaren and TallyMan, yeah...after reading your posts, I think how you've done a particulary effective job at describing this.

I wonder if slurred speech is related to AS, or maybe to an extent. I think anyone, when exhausted, has a shut-down issue  But I wonder if for Aspies, it's the system overload that leads to this slurred speech...maybe something like a lower threshold for exhaustion and being more sensitive to overloads.

Also there was another post about becoming mute, losing speech.
I think it's not a good idea to give up on speaking. It can definitely be worked on and improved, this loss of speech. And it's worth it, no doubt in my mind. Even though it's harder or feels strange, us HUMANS were constructed to..speak (this includes Aspies:) so we should never give it up.

All the time. I can be very hard to understand :S and when I'm tired, things seem like they sound far away, which doesn't help.

I don't slur my speech, but I do stutter when I feel that I'm pressured to speak, and it can be a real pain, sometimes.

Normally, in verbal conversation I speak clearly, albeit simplistically. I process conversations too slowly to speak as eloquently as I type.
But the other day I went into the kitchen and my housemates were cooking, and boiling the kettle. I tried to ask who boiled the kettle and if I could use some of the water, but it came out as "who err... kettle the kettle who boiled...". It was really weird. A simple sentence, and I couldn't make it form. Somebody actually had to finish the sentence for me. That had never happened to me before. I literally couldn't feel the sentence form in my head.

At times I have severe speech problems. Mine could happen when I'm stressed or when I'm not. I have two things that happen when I speak. One is when I "lose" the ability to speak and all that comes out of my mouth is gibberish. Not one person would be able to understand me. And when this happens the words I am saying are not even real words. Like the word "no" becomes "nar" or something to that effect. Then the other thing that happens is that my speech would become badly disorganized. I can't say a simple sentence. Here's an example of what I would say. "You know what who the cow now there stuff wow computer car in the sky why?" Something like that. Really random stuff comes to my mind and that is what I say. It doesn't happen all the time and I am thankful for that. I think it is related to autism.

Even when I hear myself talk normally I get treated as if my speech is slurred. Especially when someone is intimidated by my behavior but not by similar behavior of someone else.

Exactly! I can totally relate. My stuttering gets worse as well

I have slurred speech sometimes because I have a tremor disorder that can affect my voice. It's worse when I'm tired, anxious or stressed. Some psych meds have made it worse like Wellbutrin/Bupropion which I'm currently on but it's only made it a little worse & Wellbutrin is helping me so I don't want to change it. The med that made it really bad thou was Abilify/Aripiprazole. Abilify caused bad dry mouth so it may of been related to that.
