i liked the bit about how you have to translate your thoughts...
i was just having a similar discussion with my adviser about that... seeing to speaking. and talking to make me see so i can think.
LabPet send me lots of information that maybe helpful for you and your adviser. She wrote:
'I think in images, patterns, sequences, concepts. Since I do not think in constructs, such as verbal words, I must translate my thoughts (into speech) or recognizable format for you so we can share and understand each other.'
'Autistics can feel 'locked inside.' For me, I am foreign in that I am looking through an impenetrable one-way mirror; I can see out, but NTs cannot see inside. I can, and do communicate. However I must translate for you since I assimilate differently. I can know something clearly in my mind and have no means of expression whatsoever .... imagine.'
'I communicate differently. I often will write, gesture, draw, or point in tandem to speaking to you (verbal speech feels foreign to me). I do understand you but I might be slow to respond - please be patient. And I am very shy. I interpret your words literally; listening to your voice intonation, and rate. I cannot know your intent or read your emotions.'
LabPet sent me heaps of information - too much to put in one video. I plan on putting on Youtube a powerpoint presentation she wrote. This presentation is given to her fellow students.
I believe LabPet needs to write a books.... a textbook about autism by an autistic! She writes so well, translates well for neurotypicals plus she has a wicked sense of humour.
