The worse thing is when you have to argue with other autistics (think 3 vs 1) who say they're broken and that autism is a disease, denigrating the "low=functioning" autistics and saying the low=functioning autistics, as many of them can't speak, etc. can't do s**t.

I doubt they ever will discover a 'cure', but if they suddenly did, so what? It won't be mandatory and even if you decide to take it, it's not going to wipe out your personality. Would it be much different from the antipsychotics and anti-depressents that so many people on this forum are taking already? By giving an ADHD child ritalin, is that diluting his/her personality? Or is it merely allowing them to focus on the task at hand and letting them get on with life.

Loads of people on this forum are complaining of how hard they find it to interact with NTs and how they wish it was easier. A 'cure' for autism would basically be something that facilitates a person learning better communication skills. The general consensus here seems to be that all NTs should strive to understand people with As instead. Sorry, but they outnumber us 99 to 1, so it's up to us to adapt (by pill or by will). Or we could always just sit around and mope about how hard life is.

(sorry, bad mood atm)

I think that most people who believe in a "cure" think of LFA. When they think of autism, they see someone so low-functioning that it scares them.

Let's face it, LFA need lots of help and continual support. They can't live on their own, or functin properly in our world. Learning if there are genetic or environmental triggers that would save people onthat end of the spectrum from being so challenged is not necessarily a bad thing.

As people with Asperger's we are somewhere at the high end of the spectrum. We don't fully know what it's like to be LF. I know that some days I would love it if someone could make things easier for me.

Whenever you encounter someone who rants at you becuase of what you are...exchange it with black. Should we "cure" black people? I use it when arguing against homophobia. When they say gay people shouldn't have children, I ask them how they feel if I say black people shouldn't have children. And I go from there....it's what we are...not something we have a choice over. And just because we are different, doesn't mean we need to be fixed.

Yes, actually. When I was dx'ed "hyperactive" as a child, they put me on it for about a year and a half. It certainly did dilute my personality, almost to the point of making me catatonic. Didn't help me one bit otherwise. Thankfully my parents had the good sense to take me off of it.

I'm a strong advocate against relying on big pharma to solve our problems, though I can see how it might help some cases. For most, I would certainly recommend the "will" route rather than the "pill" route, if you feel inclined to adapt at all.

Homosexuals were outnumbered 10 to 1, but they finally rose up and demanded the freedom to just be themselves. They didn't let the homophobes force them to "turn straight". African Americans were similarly outnumbered, yet demanded fair treatment and respect for civil rights in the 50's and 60's and finally achieved it. They didn't let the racists force them to the back of the bus any more. Just because we are more outnumbered than those groups, does not mean we are going to let the NT's force us to be "normal", if that is even possible.

Don't mean to make it worse, but just pointing out that for many of us with AS, it is a core civil rights issue. We just demand the right to be ourselves. If NT's are unable or unwilling to accept us for who we are, it is their loss. Just leave us the f*** alone then. Is that too much to ask? 8O

For one, given the Congress and US Government, I wouldn't put it past them. The US did Eugenics in the past and I suspect they'll do it again

No; a cure would be a surrender to the greater society, forced on them

O RLY? The Minority has a duty to preserve its' existence given the harassment by the majority and the aggression by the majority. THEY fired the first shot. Do Autistics tend to start s**t? No. Often THEY are messed with first, the mainstream (not saying 'NTs' as NTs get screwed similarly by other NTs). They HAVE adapted, they use the internet and technology, which they tend to be involved in to facilitate communications.

What about the many examples of where LFAs end up HFAs or Aspergers?

Well here is my take on the LFA HFA issue. I do not believe that there is a major difference in the neurovariation. The difference I see is in cognitive ability.

Yes is the medical community can improve on whatever affected their cognitive level then it is worth looking into.

One thing that I think the clinical community does not realize is that our method of processing seems to take a higher level of cognitive ability to be efficient (almost like a threshold). Not to mention to learn and apply the missing innate social skills. With the effort that takes, how much of our cognitive capability does this require when we are applying it. NTs can function in society at a much lower cognitive level because of there innate social skills. Apply intellectual attributes in a non-social environment no but in a social environment yes

You notice I do not use IQ because those measures still have significant biases based on innate social skill level. If I had to specify an additionally needed IQ requirement I would say 15-25 points since non-linear analysis is such a more complicated process.

And yes I know this is controversial

By far the most telling of all statements... Leave us the f**k alone... Cure the guy who wants curing, and leave those who dont feel the need well alone.

Even if a "cure" wasn't legally mandatory society will find ways to make us take it "voluntarily" in the same way Libertarians claim that people "voluntarily" work in crap jobs in an oppressive economic system to make ends meet. Autistics will loose disability payments because taxpayers and thus the government will see no reason to "pay for people who can be cured." If there is a "cure" autistics will loose any assistance we have except for being paid to be "cured."

If there was a cure for autism that could change the very structures and operation of your brain, it would be nothing less than revolutionary. You could always opt out of it. If you were cured before you had a choice, you wouldn't know enough about being autistic to have an opinion about it. Getting money for research can't hurt the state of science.

WP is not just an aspie/hf community,it is representing all ends of the spectrum.
as an LFA WPer,am do know what it's like to be lf,am also know what it's like to see others try to speak for lf,where many hfs/aspies say choice should be given to them but cure the lfs if the chance ever comes.
there should be no selectiveness in one end of the spectrum having more rights and respect than the other,
everyone should have it equally, choice shouldn't be restricted or forced by anyone,no one else can decide for another whether they have a poor quality of life and are suffering or not.

--
as for a cure meaning those who dont want it will have benefits stopped,...they do not stop benefits for terminal illnesses like cancer, and they do not stop benefits for people with mental illnesses who choose not to take medication.

You're right, I should have said mainstream as well. I do have some really good friends that are (presumably) NT's. I wouldn't call many of them mainstream however.
