Dragonfly_Dreams, I''l be most sincere in saying, I've been in therapy for Depression & Anxiety for over 21yrs now.. Yep, a long time indeed. However, some of my issues have been due to circumstance whereas others might have been brought about with dealing with AS.Still, I'm glad though that I'm able to alleviate much of the stress which caries on in the outside world by either posting replies or reading what I feel is significant posts here that have been most helpful..

Yep. I see a counselor every couple of weeks. She does mostly cognitive stuff... I am working on learning how to get my schedule into some sort of regularity, especially since I seem unable to do actual work for more than about three hours at a time, once a day. If I am ever to get a job I need to be capable of eight hours...

I've been on disability since 2002, and I'm not sure I'll ever be able to hold a full time job. Most of my work in therapy so far has been revolving around how to talk to people, how to learn to communicate effectively. I went to two years of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and I feel that it helped me a lot. Mostly in understanding why other people say or do the things they do.

I guess part of my confusion lies in that things I used to do were deemed as inappropriate and bad. Like rocking, spacing off, saying random things, joking inappropriately, not understanding jokes or getting offended at things that were jokes was seen as a personality flaw, not asking for help or being able to function alone in many ways was seen as co-dependency, indecisiveness and impulsively combined with extreme times of creativity was called Bipolar, being chameleon like around others because I always felt awkward, feeling like a poser at life, and self harm behaviors I've done since I was little, head banging, rocking, hitting myself, and eventually when I was 20 I starting cutting. DBT helped me to stop that, but it was replaced by other things. I try very hard not to do them now bascically because I was told I was a bad mother for doing many of these things. When I would be doing what we now know as stimming, even if it wasn't hurting anyone.. I was told I was a bad mom. They threatened to take my kids. All that was called Borderline Personality disorder based on the fact that I was sexually abused when I was little. Other than that I had a happy life living with my grammy.

I know I'm rambling. I'm sorry.

Basically, I was told I was bad and wrong for the way I was acting. That it needed to stop and be changed.

Now I'm being told its how I am. And I guess I'm confused where to go from here.

Thank you all for your insights and honesty so far.

I've been in therapy on and off since I was 14 years old. It's never really helped as I can never seem to tell the therapist whats on my mind, so they end up thinking i'm fine and dismissing me from their services.
The things I was in therapy for (officially) were anxiety and depression. But we discussed a few other things such as social problems, anger and my childhood.

I'm meant to be starting therapy again soon for depression-related issues. It's going to be more wasted time...so good thing it's for free.

I was seeing a Psychologist a few years ago for depression, followed by a bonafide Psychiatrist with my then BF. I could of been diagnosed with something then, but I wasn't exactly honest throughout the session cos I didn't want my BF to know about my obsessions and OCD.
I may be seeing a psychologist some time in the coming months (my employer is sending me there). I have no idea what will happen or if she'll diagnose me with anything.

Ah, tell me about it. I've literally had to say, "it's really bad, trust me! I know it doesn't look like it, but I need help!" I think that's part of being on the spectrum; people will comment on how calm and collected I am even when I think I'm going crazy. I just can't convey those strong emotions enough, I guess. 8O

Think about it. Do you think therapists go to see therapists? I bet they don't. When you know too much, you know too much. What could someone else tell your overanalytical mind? How to use your emotional toolbox? Sure.
It's quite humorous. Whenever I've sat across from a psych. I get the giggles and want to laugh or ridicule them somehow--not sure why. It's rude, really.

I guess I haven't had good experiences with therapists/psychologists/psychiatrists. I'm skeptical.

Mainly, I don't like someone taking notes when I speak! This irks me to no end.

Even at a PPT, I hate that note taking business--it's so dehumanizing. It feels strange when everyone starts writing after I speak. I want to say, put the GD pen/pencils down. I feel invaded. I feel, if something is important enough, you'll remember it. If not, then it shouldn't be recalled. Notes are for college lecture halls. I remember what's important. Others can do it to if they really wanted to, if they had a vested interest in the child/patient. No, he/she is simply another dysfunctional that needs sorting out and we better cover our you know whats.

(I hope I did the quote thingy right) Oh my god that's how I FEEL! I pick my nose and OH MY GOD YOU JUST WROTE 100 WORDS WHY!! !! !! !! !! I feel a therapist didn't give me good advice she said I should go to a gym and socialize and just get over my issues. I tried this by getting a job and my behavior upset a coworker. I now beleive after much research and stuff that while not officially diagnosed that I have Asperger's. My overall opinion is my behavior has upset FAMILY,FRIENDS,STUDENTS,TEACHERS,COWORKERS,AND BOSSES SO DO NOT TELL ME TO JUST GO ON AND PUT THE PAST IN THE PAST BECAUSE I'LL JUST DO THAT AND THEN UPSET PEOPLE AGAIN AND IT'LL BE AN ENDLESS CYCLE!! ! IT'S ABOUT GETTING HELP TO CHANGE MY BEHAVIOR NOT SHOVING IT ASIDE AS IF IT'S NOTHING!! ! So for me I've tryed ON MY OWN to understand my behavior better and I hope my school/job experiences have taught me enough for the future. :-)

I feel if you are good in the field of Psychology in the aspect of helping people (Psychiatrist,Pscyhologist,Therapist etc.) UNDERSTAND THE Emotional Math problem. X (Listen to my problem)+Y(Process my problem)=Z (try to repair my problem) I say repair because psychology isn't a quick fix and they are a "repair" man of sorts and not a miracle worker so your t.v. might not be fixed such as your emotional issue might not be fixed. Also have MORE THAN ONE IDEA! I was given advice from my Therapist which I hated so I didn't use it her response "How am I going to help you if you don't take the advice?" My Psychology teacher understads the X+Y=Z issue and I would overhear her saying which she has also said to me "Let me know if that works." SO SHE CARES ABOUT YOUR EMOTIONAL STATE AND WANTS TO HELP YOU AND BY THOSE WORDS YOU KNOW YOU CAN GO TO HER AND SAY HEY THAT ADVICE DIDN'T WORK AND SHE'D GIVE YOU DIFFERENT ADVICE!! !! !

WHY COULDN'T THE PSYCHIATRIST AND THERAPIST I DEALT WITH COULDN'T BE MORE LIKE MY OLD PSYCHOLOGY TEACHER SHE WAS SO NICE AND AWESOME!! !! !! !!

It could be that psychologists and clinicians don't are out of the mainstream of society. Whenever you are out of the loop, and have your head in a book, you lose that emotional connection to others. A person is like one big theory sitting in front of you. You become so hung up on being right tha tyou forget that a person is multi-dimensional.

I'm in therapy for many things including my depression, autism, anxiety, and something I don't agree with which is schizoaffective disorder. I also see a psychiatrist as well. My depression is very severe but I always appear happy. Even while suicidal I look and even act happy so no one takes me seriously. I have inappropriate emotions and even though I am depressed, I can't cry. I have been in therapy on and off most of my life.

I'm in therapy though its not so much for AS. I was put in therapy for anxiety, chronic pain and PTSD. She's tried hypnotism, biofeedback and EMDR treatments, but honestly none of it works very well. The EMDR might work better if she did it consistantly instead of making me wait 2-3 weeks between treatments.

I have a weird relationship with my therapist. I hated her at first. Then I got sexually attracted to her; we have super bad transference going on and now I am able to manipulate her to the point I had her almost ready to cry at the end of our session last week. uhm... I don't think its suppose to work like that. I was really depressed so I ended up making her depressed. I thought psychs were suppose to be immune to that stuff.

You've got a good point. I currently have an OT and a psychologist. The weird thing is the OT gives me more psychological support than the psychologist does. :? And when something goes wrong its the OT who I can call on her cellphone crying while the psych can only be reached by calling her answering service then insisting I am having a terrible panic attack and can't breathe. Then wait a hour for them to contact her and her to call me back. For some odd reason, OT's give better support, but get paid less and recognized less.

I used to be. I'm not anymore. I'm more content with myself than therapists ever are; so why go and get told I need to change when I'm happy as is? I mean, I'm in grad school with at least a 3.6 (haven't checked in a bit)--so I must be doing something right. I just got a job--had a successful interview and everything. I even brought up my having Asperger's Syndrome. It turned out that both of my interviewers had family members on the spectrum. :)

I've been seeing a psychotherapist for nearly 6 months now. Not for AS, as I don't see this as needing a cure. I'm looking for insight (yeah and a cure would be nice) into the ever more serious bouts of depression I've been getting for many years.

I don't know how it works, but the strange thing is, I recently have felt genuinely happier than I have for many years.
