I think Tammy is a beautiful name. Of course, one of my biggest longtime obsessive crushes was on a girl named Tammy so I might be a bit biased.

I think everyone's blowing this out of proportion. While I would choose a normal/boring name for my kids (if my wife and I were to have them) I doubt it would save them any embarassment at school. Kids will find reasons to make fun of other kids - whether it's because of their name or something else. My last name is really easy to make fun of (you don't have to change it) but the only time kids chose to make fun of that was when it was misspelled in the yearbook.

Besides, many of these celebrity kids go to private schools where everyone has a unique name. They'd probably get made fun of for having a normal name.

I dislike the name Dawn , absolutely despise it, there were four other Dawns in my class while growing up, it was my name till I legally changed mine to Caroline, weirdly although almost everyone calls me Caro which is what I had thought I would like to be called.I think of myself in my head as Carrie.

I like unique names, my kids both have names that are unusual in that although they are real names they are spelled as their original ethnic versions which makes both hard for people to read , but their middle names Alex and Lucy are pretty normal, and like their father they could use them if they wanted. I pick names I like saying.

I think it's odd to react violently to a name. Maybe if someone of that name had been mean to you or something, but just on hearing it seems strange.

I don't like stupid names, either. I also don't like common names with altered spellings. Celebrities and other people give their kids really weird names.

I have a problem with parents naming children after nouns like Destiny or misspell a name to make it "unique".

I think there are a few people who didn't read my post properly - it was my first day of school when I pushed Tammy. I WAS FOUR YEARS OLD. So those people who said I was mean - I WAS FOUR AND AUTISTIC FOR CHRISTS SAKE *shakes head* And yes of course I know Tammy is short for Tamara but I had never heard the name before so it was weird. I think I also pointed out I like the name now. I work with a Tamara wo will punch you if you call her Tammy and her daughter must be called Elizabeth not Liz or Lizzie.

Detren: I agree with you completely that names should be considered and should have a meaning. The names I hate the most are trendified names that are given to be cool and nothing else. I saw an article that brand names are becoming popular, names like Chanel (There was a child named Chanel No 5 I'm not kidding) and Prada, and all kinds of car names. I can't stand the Bayden/Kayden/Zayden trend (my cousin is Zayden). I don't much like the name Jet - when John Travolta named his son Jet, it had a great meaning, he loves planes and JET is his initials. But then Jet became a trendy name and you see them everywhere.

I don't mind foreign names so much, usually they sound exotic but there are some names that sound weird in English. I know a kid called Mahnoor (manure) and her sister is Laiba (people tend to pronounce it Labia). I'm trying to convince her mom to change them to Nora and Laila!

FYI, I was being sarcastic. I tend to forget my tone doesn't come through so well in written word... but had I been delivering my message in person, it would have been in over-the-top fashion. ;) So, you have my apologies for any miscommunication there.

Personally, I still have problems with people with the same name as those who have mistreated me in the past. It's totally irrational, and I try to ignore it... but I think the name triggers off those unpleasant memories. "John", "Chad", and "Michelle" are the worst. I really have to struggle not to outright ignore people with those names. And it is VERY hard for me to take seriously anyone with a name like "Barbie" or "Biff".

I was serious about leaving a flaming bag of dookie on the front porch of people who name their kids rediculous names though! :D

I do. I work at a call center and the names that I have seen on accounts sometimes make me say 'parents aren't evey trying these days'

some of the names I have seen are 'butch' and 'bruno' what kind of parent would name thier child that?

Today on one of the accounts that I was repairing, the customer's first name was 'Sunday'

My name is Aimée, and I think you'll find that Aimée is the original spelling of the name, its French and it means beloved, Amy and all other forms are derived from it.

Other than one case in which a mother wanted to name her unborn baby "the thing" , I don't mind uncommon names. My children, if I ever have any or adopt any, will have uncommon (because they're old) names as well.

I do however have get annoyed if I open the newspaper and read 4 or 5 announcements about children with the same first name and just different second names. Because gosh, it's so annoying to be in class with 5+ people who share (your) a name!

LOL. What, exactly, is a "stupid" name? Just because you don't like a name doesn't make it "stupid." I hope you don't become a teacher, or I'll feel sorry for anyone in your class who's not a Mary, John, or Elizabeth.
