Does anyone else dislike primates?

While I am not a huge fan of primates, I feel sorry for the chimps & apes in zoos. I have not seen very many happy gorillas at zoos. They usually look bored & really unhappy. I know they are not the cleanest creatures, but they have an intelligence that other animals don't possess. And I am sure they know they are in captivity. How sad for them! I once visited the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, & there were some teenaged boys tormenting the silverback gorilla there. He had this haunted look in his eyes. It made me really sad that he was in such a tiny enclosure, & had his dignity stripped away. Zoos are best for animals that don't have self-awareness or care that they are in captivity. And there are obviously some zoos that are better than others. Saw some happy gorillas playing at the Sand Diego Zoo.
I think some monkeys are cute, & I enjoy watching lemurs. The one primate that I find really unattractive is the orangutan. But in general, I prefer birds or animals other than the primates. Maybe it's because I have had dogs, cats, & birds as pets.

I agree with your general sentiment here. Any animal that can recognise themselves in a mirror should not be kept for the entertainment of humans. Humans are primates too and are exceptionally cruel compared to Gorillas, Orangs and Bonobos. Chimps can be very cruel and share this characteristic with us. Dolphins can also recognise themselves in mirrors (I think) and should be given rights equal to other sentient creatures like Chimps, Gorillas, Humans etc.
The local zoo has a chimpanzee exhibit. You are right, the chimps there aren't the best looking but humans aren't that good looking either.
What fascinates me is chimps are so similar to humans in their DNA yet they will put up with all the crap other animals put up with, being locked in a zoo, for instance, sleeping in the sun with lots of flies buzzing around. Things that many people do not want to tolerate.
If I were a chimp I would rebel, for sure. I would create a chimp army and refuse to ever be a "pet" or live in a zoo. I wonder what chimps thinks when they see people? Do they think they are similar or do they think humans are completely alien?
At the zoo, I stare at the chimp's feet while they snooze behind the
indestructable plexiglass that keeps them enclosed.

Chimps aren't as clever as humans and don't have any defense against guns and other technology. That is why they don't rebel. They simply can't. If someone locked you in a cage, what could you do about it?

History has demonstrated you do not need "technology" to rebel, just heart and spirit.

I'm afraid this is not correct. History does not prove anything. Chimps are not people so our history cannot prove anything about chimps. Technology is connected to everything we do as is our intelligence. If you took away our weapons and our intelligence, Chimps would beat us because they are stronger than us.

You cannot stop a species, human or otherwise from rebeling. It does not matter if the technology is lacking. The technology is not what creates a rebellion in the first place. Sure, technology can implement a rebellion, but cannot give the rebellion what it needs to be successful, the courage and drive, the desire to be free from a percieved "evil".

There is a chimp who broke free of its enclosure in southern California earlier this month. As far as I know, he is still out there on the loose. Chimps can & do use tools on their own. They can also learn sign language. Also, they have attacked other chimps & there's at least one documented attack on a human being who was pretty badly injured. Soooo, it is possible for chimps to rebel against humans.
So you think that rebellion and freedom is a matter of courage?
If you think this, then anyone who is imprisoned against their will is a coward or does not have enough courage or spirit or will.
You are unintentionally implying that all people in a country where there is not democracy are cowards, dispirited or have no will. If this is true, then it is impossible for such people to ever rebel as if they had spirit, will or courage, they would already be free.

I am not implying anything. Anyone who wants to be free is not a coward, IMO.
This is true. Chimps can use tools but they cannot make or use guns. Humans can make and use guns so chimps would have to be able to survive being shot in order to rebel. Planet of the Apes is not a realistic scenario.
I know that is not what you intended to say but this is what can be deduced from what you said.
You said:
A) Rebellion cannot be stopped if there is sufficient drive, courage, will, spirit etc.
I said:
B) Any person or failed rebel does not possess sufficient drive courage , will, spirit etc.
A) and B) are consistent statements.
Therefore you did imply the any person or species who are enslaved either do not want freedom or do not possess sufficient courage, will, spirit.
Either technology is necessary to rebel or some people do not want freedom and are thus cowards (do not possess sufficient courage).

You can have a rebellion, experience setbacks due to issues like not having the tools needed to implement your rebellion, yet you can still have the heart of someone who is willing to give everything to be free. This is what rebellion is and an example of utlimate courage. Courage, in this case, is seen when you are willing to give up anything and everything to be free.
