I know some states with lower driving ages 14,15 or 16 are starting to have graduated licencing that works here is aus too. Here probationary licence holders in all states regardless of age have to pisplay P plates on their cars.

When I was in high school in California, you could get a Learner's Permit at 15 1/2 if you were enrolled in Drivers' Ed. I think that has changed though. I didn't pass my drivers' test the first time. Took it again & passed it. That was when I was 22 years old, in the early 80s.

I got my learner's permit at 15 1/2 my license at age 16. I took Driver's Ed during summerschool because my birthday is September 2nd, not the 1st and I couldn't take Driver's Ed during the school year because of my age or something.

Before I entered kindergarten, my mother thought I was brilliant and wanted me in school a year early even though I needed to be five years old on or before September 1st to get into Kindergarten.

Later my mom told me she should have just waited a year before enrolling me in Kindergarten because, even though she thought I was brilliant, she realizes I was immature.

Got it at age 19. I failed at my first attempt, but my second attempt was flawless.

Permit at 15, Licence at 16. So as soon as it was legally possible.

I live in the USA and I got my license at the age of 16 which is the regular age to get your license here. I was extremely anxious at first and I wasn't sure about how I would do driving alone and all but after about 2 months of driving alone most of my anxiety was gone and now I love driving, especially alone because it is relaxing and very easy. It isn't nearly as difficult or stressful as I expected. I still do get anxious when I drive outside of my comfort zone, but last weekend I drove an 8 hour drive from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania by myself and I did well. At times I was extremely stressed because of traffic and different roads then I was used to but all together it wasn't that bad.

Good luck with getting your license and may God help you overcome your anxiety and other difficulties. It is really not as bad as you may think.

The age here is 16. I signed up for driver's ed at high school when I was 17 (my last year of hs) and got my licence on the second try at 18. (I hit a lamp post on my first driving test and failed, but for "hit" read nudged without scratching - still disqualified me though).

I would probably not have gotten my licence at that time but was under pressure to take it through the high school driver's ed instead of waiting until later. Also, I was the oldest and my brother a year behind me was chomping at the bit. He took driver's ed second but got his licence first.

Part of the problem for me was that my parents were supposed to take me out driving but didn't - I got almost no practice in the year between driver's ed and my second test. When a friend of the family described how he took his daughter out for practice driving an hour every night, I wanted to cry. You really do need the practice. It makes a world of difference. My next youngest sister was profoundly grateful that my brother and I could take her out driving now and then for practice.

I wouldn't worry about being late to drive. One Mensa member here got her licence in her 40s. A friend of my mother's failed once or twice, and never did learn to drive standard transmission. There are well educated people in NYC who don't bother with a licence because they don't need a car where they live. And there are people who don't drive for environmental reasons.

Just take your time and do it right. And imagine how much harder it would be to get a pilot's licence.

I think I was 20 when I got mine. Somehow I passed the test on the first try, even though I bumped three cones and accidentally went down a one-way street (he yelled at me for not paying attention to the signs).

I passed my car test first time when I was 17 and I passed my bus test first time when I'd just turned 22.

I love driving too it's the only thing besides running that I really enjoy. I can drive for quite a while without stopping or getting bored.

So carpooling is against the law??

YEP! In fact, the US doesn't even have a drivers license, and there are NO real standards in ANY way! I got a CAlifornia drivers license, through the CAlifornia DMV(Department of motor vehicles)! I moved, and INdiana law requires you to get a new license within one month of the move. I got an INdiana drivers license through the INdiana BMV(Bureau of Motor Vehicles). The license looks different, has different methods of verification, and the tests are DIFFERENT! It is possible to memorize the book for ONE state, and FLUNK in the next! The Indiana test certainly covered things the California one didn't.

BTW I was SUPPOSED to take PUBLIC drivers training, but was DENIED it because of garbage surrounding claims around Prop 13!(Various unions and goverment agencies caused problems claiming they were due to budget cutbacks that MIGHT happen in the future because of R/E tax caps!) So I took PRIVATE education later. I got my license at 19 or 20. That was due to LOTS of things, but partly because there is a scam that says you can get lower rates, etc... if you have drivers ed. ALSO, I didn't have a car to drive for the test, so I BOUGHT one! There is a rule saying you can't even rent a car unless you are 25. I still remember my FATHER driving me back from the dealer in my OWN car! ALSO, I was working, and got caught up in routine.

22, no license. Always felt like sh1t for this fact, as the years went by, and still no license... Now I come here, and see I'm a yungun, lol! My bro who is three years younger than me drives, and has held back from getting his license, for the fact that he knew I'd be mortified to explain why he has one, and I don't. I've told him to get his license tho, I don't feel like crap anymore, and tho I never told him to NOT get it, I know I was holding him back in a way...

Anyway, this seems to be a common thing with Aspies. I'd really "like" to drive, as I actually hate rides almost worse than the idea of driving, but I've never picked up initiative to go out and get a license, and ever time I "practice" I seem to lose interest after a few "close calls" with cars and people... I don't think I'd be a safe driver, I try to pay attention to everything, but if I did that I'd probably crawl along at 4 miles an hour...

Age varies here actually. It's 14 1/2 in Montana and 15 for a driver's lisence. I heard back east it's 17 or 18 but I can't remember which.

Someone told me online CA is thinking about changing the age to 18. I dunno if they ever did it.

I started driving when I was 15 and had my learner's permit at that age and at 16. I didn't get my real lisence till I was almost 17.

Well, for teenagers.. I think if they are over 18, it's allowed, but don't quote me on that. They did a study and found that teenage drivers were much more likely to get into an accident if they had other teens in the vehicles with them.

On a side note, I got into an accident today.. 2 weeks with my license and I get into an accident. Nothing serious.. I bumped into a car trying to back into a parking spot. I'm sad.
