I am first born and only child

My father was the youngest of 3. His brother and sister were 11 years and 8 years older than him. My aunt and uncle seem the most Aspie-like of my family. Well my uncle at least. My aunt seems more like a mere nerd/intellectual. My dad was the more energetic and outgoing of either of them or my grandparents. Definitely not aspie.

Hmm... I'm firstborn, and I'm an aspie.

And my lil bro is the youngest and prolly aspie, but there's 15 years difference between him and the next youngest. So he may as well be a first born, he is of his generation of family.

I believe there might be many situations where the parent might have planned on having 2 or more children, but stopped at one after finding out how difficult raising such children might be.

Good point. The poll so far (75/25) certainly gives the impression that being first-born could be a factor but I know there are so many variables like this that have to be taken into account as well.

I am AS, first born, not only child. My son is AS, first born and only child. There's a little truth to the difficulty encouraging parents to not have anymore. My son had pretty severe sensory integration issues. I was pregnant after him, but miscarried. Then I left his dad. Just never met anyone else that I wanted to have kids with and had so much stuff with my son, I was already worn out. Now, my husband had "the operation", and two grown children, so he was waiting for grandchildren. Just seemed silly to go back to diapers. Also, son hit puberty and I knew the chances of having another kid on the spectrum was very high, so it just didn't seem like it was important anymore. I was trying to finish my education. I guess life got in the way.

I'm the first-born of four children (I have a brother and two half-sisters), and am Aspie and epileptic. I also get a nasty case of hayfever every summer. Seems to me that I was given all the crappy stuff because I came along first :P

On the plus side, I don't have wisdom teeth (and didn't need a brace to fix my front teeth either), so I guess it all evens out :)

First-born child here too. I have a brother two years younger who's almost completely normal in every conceivable way.

Im actually born last out of three children my mom had and Im the only one on the spectrum as far as we know. I did have a brother who died before I was born with severe birth defects for other reasons but we never knew he mightve been on the spectrum as well. Im pretty sure my dad is aspie and he was born last out of three as well.

I'm not a first born, I have an older brother by 2 years. But I was born 12 minutes before my twin brother.

I'm first born, have a sibling not much younger. I think because I was difficult to raise as a child my parents stopped making more babies :?
