Well, since I am not neuronormal by any stretch of the imagination and yet I am preoccupied with being in shape physically, I conclude that a concern with one's body image is not exclusive to NTs.

I do care about how I look for image and health wise.I always would go on diets to try to lose weight but then gain it back.

A whole new image of weight topic

I ntoice that all the responders so far are under 30 years of age. Just weight until you hit middle age, with the middle age spread!

I wrote in another topic (Bipolar Meds and Weight Gain) regarding how to keep a consistent weight when metabolism slows(in my case, due to age, not meds). It is not a diet but a discipline, and to save money and not grow out of favourite clothes. For me, being too heavy would sap my energy. This is a personal decision.

For the record, I am 5'3.5", and weigh 125 lb. This is good for my blood pressure and to also for keeping active to keep my heart healthy. I am almost 54 years old, but thank goodness I have that young Aspie look. :D 8)

To be honest i don't think worrying about your weight falls under a particular criteria for NT or Autistic people. You've got to remember everyone is different even though there is people out there with the same disorder as you or being NT like you. People worry about different things so i believe worrting about your weight can affect autistic people aswell.

There is danger in being too thin; the lower part of the "underweight" range makes you prone to a lot of things, even if you're in good shape (which is unlikely because you need a certain amount of food to sustain optimum function). It's not really BMI I'm talking about here, because muscle and bone weight changes that, and is different in different people; more like body-fat percentage, which has to be above a certain amount, otherwise you lose things like temperature control and cushioning for your organs, not to mention stuff like skin elasticity... I believe your brain and nervous system also has a certain fat percentage, meaning you would probably think less clearly and be more clumsy if you didn't have enough. And, of course, you lose reproductive function--sperm count or fertility, depending on gender.

There's the little things, too. Very small people can't carry as much or work as long without tiring. They tend to have more trouble gaining muscle. Everything that affects the human body, from medicines to alcohol to the flu, affects them more severely. I'm not saying this is true of ALL technically-underweight people; the wiry, skinny body type is probably natural and not unhealthy at all. But lose a certain amount of weight... different for everybody... and you'll be in danger.

I'm well aware that most deaths from anorexics are suicides; but a large enough percentage come from starvation and its complications that it's obvious that below a certain range, you're in trouble.

BTW, weird fact: Compare healthy "underweight" people to healthy "overweight" people, and the "overweight" people live longer! The actual difference is just under a year, so it's not dramatic. But it is safer to be overweight than underweight--probably because the extra energy stores help you survive illness longer. (Overweight and normal weight aren't very different. Obese is about as bad as underweight. This is comparing healthy people, of course. It might be better to be underweight than over for some people, especially if that is their natural body type. And this is all going by BMI, which is really only good for judging big populations, not individuals.)

I don't have a problem with body image or anything like that, but I do have this weird obsession with maintaining a certain weight. I know it's just a number, but I like to keep it with me, as it were ;)

i care more about my weight than body image. i need to be under 160lbs to be a lightweight rower. right now i hover around 160 and can drop under it for competition but i'd like to be comfortably under it so i'm looking to lose another 5lbs or more. after that i might build up some muscle and get closer to 160 but i want to be leaner at the moment.

i'd also like a sixpack. i've almost got one right now but there's still a tiny bit of fat on top so it's not really clear. it's clear in some lighting but not in others.

I'm a diagnoised aspie and i obsess over my weight.
Part of my obsession with numbers includes things like counting calories etc. I've even resorted to making myself sick if i feel i've eaten too much or gone over the calorie limit (Although i'm not actually overweight, around 130lbs at 5 4) I used to weigh less but my new meds have caused 10lbs or so of weight gain.

So i definetely don't think body image is just a NT thing.

I used to care, and although I'm not thin, I'm content. I'm healthy, my favorite clothes fit me well... What's to complain about?

i like fat, but only when i'm eating it. my quest for weight loss to get into my weight class has lead me to despise fat on people. for a while i couldn't find anyone who wasn't thin attractive (i used to like somewhat chubby girls), but i've changed a bit and i now accept a bit of body fat. i still can't help but be disgusted by obese people. i don't treat them differently, but it bothers me to look at them because i don't like the fat on my body, i see it as useless weight that only hinders me (which it does, fat only slows a boat in rowing).

I don't care much how I look. I want to be healthy though and I want to be able to find clothes that fit easily and I don't want people to treat me badly because of my weight, so I try to not put on weight.

I've been a bit overweight for most of my life and it takes really little for me to gain weight and it's hard for me to lose weight due to physical disabilities. I hate how hard it can be to find clothes that fit comfortably (I hate shopping and hate how long it takes for me to find something good). I also hate how some people focus on my weight and make assumptions about me. On the other hand, when I lost a lot of weight a few years ago I hated the sexual attention I started getting, so I guess either way I won't like the way people behave towards me. :?

My weight isn't that important to me, but my body is. I like looking normal sized. I don't care for how wide, slim, small, big, whatever other people look though. But I want my body to look the way I like and that includes body size among other things.

I don't know why other people may like being light or normal or even really slim. I was laughed at after explaining my reasons. I like it because that way I can do sports better, fit is most clothes and because my body doesn't get in the way when I do something.

My weight is a lot and does not seem to fit what I look like and how much fat there is on me. I constantly hear other girls talking about their weight though, instead of how they want to look. I don't think I understand why they do that.
