My personal theory is that at least in the case of the American media, autism is just another
war-front. The media is filled with crises and wars--trying to use shock value to get attention. By focusing on the aspects that are viewed as negative by American cultures, the media gets their story, and people see ASDs as disorders/diseases/what have you. Also, by not focusing on the fact that autistic spectrum disorders are
spectrum disorders, a quick and easy label is made.
