The problem is, these morons see it as a disease; and seem to forget we have consciousness and can endeavour to work around our difficulties!
What NT's see and what aspies feel are two vastly distinct items.

What happened to "I think, therefore I am"

I just found out my cousin has Asperger's too. That makes two people I know now. He was diagnosed as a child and...

You can't have it because you are nothing like him...

Well, duh!! !

yeah ok but at least hes being honest we dont think u have it from what we know about it u dont meet the criteria. well aspergers is an adult form of autism autistic children have behaviour problems an generally cant comunicate or learn and they mostly have 1 amaising skill

This is what my dad and step-mother know about it. My comment was simply

should I laugh NOW or later? ...seriously, where did you get that from?
puttin it politely, that is not accurate...

Oh yeah, that I am sick of hearing that. And one time I told someone that my uncle who happens to be a dr probably is under the spectrum based on his developmental history and the way he is.. and what was the response to that? "No way he isn't autistic, he is a doctor"... damn, too bad I didn't think to tell her to go onto to google and look up "Temple Grandin".

My GP said to me today that I was very well-rounded for someone with Asperger's. I couldn't decide whether to be insulted or not.

Because I was talking to her and not jumping up and down staring at the wall

Yes, I had a doc say that.

You articulate well and speak very clearly. I get that from a lot of people. Another thing that they judge me on, is my good eye-contact. If only they knew how hard it is for me to give people that good eye-contact, because I don't want to be seen as another Rain Man.

yeah, its typical operating procedure for them to try to deny aspies and autists and toss us in with other more manageable groups.
There are specific benefits in some states for aspies and autists and they try to keep the bar high so that people don't claim such benefits- and they try to keep people ignorant that such benefits exist so people don't claim them.

They keep oscillating back and forth between scitzophrenia and psychosis for me- both of which are simply bizzare to try to equate with me because I'm so completely not like that. The reason for this is because I'm too high functional. Crazy. I wish i had all of my old testing materials. I should probably demand more testing till they dig deep enough again to finally "Get" it.

Its hard to say, but on some occasions i just bring the diagnostics manual with me next time around and say "okay, so you think i'm
x. But i don't meet any of these criteria and i don't meet any of those criteria and the one criteria i do meet is explained better in my case by diagnosis aspie."

Lately? I just let them write whatever pleases them as long as i keep getting my check.

Where did she buy her Phd from? Question is, where do a lot of them buy their Phd's from? Ebay?

This morning a doctor told me,

"It must be something else, maybe histrionic personality. You can't be autistic - you've had a normal life, you were married!"

Your doc is full of crap. Aspie women are more likely to get into long-term relationships than male aspies are, and unfortunately a lot of the current data on AS is based on observations of children with AS, not adults. In all reality, unless someone looks for a site like this one, there's not that much information out there on AS. Your doc hasn't done much research on it, apparently. You might be better off with a different doctor.

is it just me or are the doctors clueless in that subject matter everywhere?? isn't that amazing... we're at the forefront of some new all-encompasing psychiatric theory or what...?

My favourite is "you don't look autistic". What the hell does autistic look like? Hmmm....evidently it's not red hair, green eyes, and smart ass personality.

"You can't be autistic. You have a sense of humour." As I"m wearing my, "How can I think outside of the box? They won't let me out of the box" tee shirt.

It's weird because I know plenty of NT people who don't have any sense of humour at all. What does this say about them?

I won't equate all of this to 'NT' people. Some aspies have told me I couldn't be one of them because I like myself for all my quirks. 8O

"You can't be autistic, you're not like my brother!''

From a friend.

This thread goes to show how misunderstood Aspergers is, even in the medical community. I guess in fairness to doctors, they can't be knowledgable about every illness and condition. I have another condition that can be very hard to find a doctor who knows about it and knows the correct treatment. Aspergers is still relatively new, and when people hear "autism" they frequently hear "Rain Man." Those of us high functioners CAN make attachments, CAN make eye contact, CAN have relationships, CAN articulate and speak but so many think any one of those things means you're NT!! !!
