Here is the diagnostic criteria used in the U.S. Note that obsessive interests are not a requirement.

Quote:
Diagnostic criteria for 299.80 Asperger's Disorder

A. Qualitative impairment in social interaction, as manifested by at least two of the following:

(1) marked impairment in the use of multiple nonverbal behaviors such as eye-to-eye gaze, facial expression, body postures, and gestures to regulate social interaction

(2) failure to develop peer relationships appropriate to developmental level

(3) a lack of spontaneous seeking to share enjoyment, interests, or achievements with other people (e.g., by a lack of showing, bringing, or pointing out objects of interest to other people)

(4) lack of social or emotional reciprocity

B. Restricted repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, and activities, as manifested by at least one of the following:

(1) encompassing preoccupation with one or more stereotyped and restricted patterns of interest that is abnormal either in intensity or focus

(2) apparently inflexible adherence to specific, nonfunctional routines or rituals

(3) stereotyped and repetitive motor mannerisms (e.g., hand or finger flapping or twisting, or complex whole-body movements)

(4) persistent preoccupation with parts of objects

C. The disturbance causes clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

D. There is no clinically significant general delay in language (e.g., single words used by age 2 years, communicative phrases used by age 3 years).

E. There is no clinically significant delay in cognitive development or in the development of age-appropriate self-help skills, adaptive behavior (other than in social interaction), and curiosity about the environment in childhood.

F. Criteria are not met for another specific Pervasive Developmental Disorder or Schizophrenia.

(I used bold print to point out how broad the definition is, and therefore how much variety there is among those of us who have been diagnosed.)

My problem is I can't figure out how limited my social interaction is. My relatives point out I'm bad at it, but how? I have tried to keep track of my gestures trying to figure out if I use them properly... I barely gesture at all, and when I do I seem to have only one, spinning my hand in a circle, that can't be normal. I'm pretty sure I can read facial expressions, but well, I'm not sure exactly how much empathy I have, I know I have at least some. I'm horribly, horribly obsessive however, like when I was into Pokemon and I used to draw them all over the chalkboards in high school in every class

Any tips on any questions to ask to gauge these sort of things?

Maybe you don't have asperger's. Just because you can identify with some quirks, it doesn't mean you are on the spectrum.
What is your major malfunction?

Are you a hyperchondriac? Did you watch Mozart and the Whale and suddenly think you have AS?

"Stimming" isn't really an AS thing, i.e., people with AS aren't much different to normal people in this regard compared to Autism (normal people bounce their leg for example).

The obsessive interest is needed, otherwise you'll be pegged with PDD-NOS if you have the same or similar social impairment compared to those with AS.

I don't see why you can't be vocal and expressive with AS [or PDD-NOS]; a person with AS will tend to be vocal and expressive in a one-sided manner if they are.

Everyone in middle school bounced their legs.

Also someone with ADHD, like myself will tap and bounce my leg.

I don't fit it, either.

I don't relate to a lot of aspies because so many seem to get nothing from social interaction, while I get way to much.

I'm in kind of the same boat.

I never seen that movie. Personally someone else that was aspie said I was like them and I saw similarities. But as I say in my profile I'm not sure, it could be something else.

I don't have a "mechanized voice" mine just sounds doped up even though I am not and I have that glazy, drugged out look to my face. I look spacy.
People think I am slow and/or "not all there". I never share my personal medical history with anyone and am even uncomfortable discussing it with my family. So, no one says
"Ah, she has Asperger's Syndrome"
Actually, no one says anything to my face because I have this strange reputation of not being able to talk about the past, it's a touchy subject, they avoid it.
I think talking about sad stuff that happened in the past just causes a depression, I agree with the CBT tenent. Too much talking and thinking about something upsetting or emotional is a bad thing to me.
I go on and on about something I am interested in or a complaint, whatever, like a very long lecture I cannot stop. People who have seen and heard me do it say I can "rant and rave" that's what it's like and I feel bad about it:(
This tends to annoy those who know me, I think it's my most annoying characteristic.
