Growing up......so much hate at school
But that is no excuse. BEST way to prevent it at school is to have an advocate, a RELENTLESS one who gives the bullies the message it will not be tolerated and kids who are the targets should always be protected in the schools and the schools owe it to the kids to provide mediators and counselors.
This sort of thing should never be tolerated or allowed to happen to any child.
The public schools should be a refuge and safe haven for every child.
Indeed. Unfortunately, I came to suspect that the schools thought it to be to their advantage that bullies pushed around the kids that didn't "fit in." I don't know how many times teachers and administrators told me that if I just wasn't so oversensitive, bullies wouldn't push my sensory buttons, or adults (including but not limited to school authorities) told me that once I got the surgeries that would make me look normal, people would finally be nice to me. And then, when because of the inaction of my purported "protectors" to make sure I didn't get hurt, I defended myself, suddenly I was the horrible, evil bully who didn't know how to treat other people. Hmmmm.... if I had been like everyone else, somehow I think I would've gotten the same "kids will be kids" dismissal that everyone else seemed entitled to.
In many cases, it seemed that for all the pretension and talk of diversity and open-mindedness, the adults were as intolerant, xenophobic and lacking in empathy as the kids they were supposed to supervise. This needs to change, and ALL students, regardless of looks, neurotype or social ability so long as they're not deliberately and knowingly harming others, need equal protection. Otherwise, school shootings will continue to happen, and thousands of lives will continue to be damaged.
And all too many people DO excuse the behavior of bullies based on the earlier part of the argument listed - that bullies have been abused themselves. This is not to say that it isn't true, I just wish it didn't end there, like it was somehow okay for these people to take their aggression out on innocents because they were mistreated. The schools, instead of allowing the cycle to continue through this excuse, should provide better counseling and teach people, bullies and victims alike, to stand up to their abusers rather than project their anger onto others, and be willing to provide backup in the form of personal or legal intervention when necessary.
I really believe if enough people demand things change they will. The whole philosophy of what a school is should be overhauled. Think about all the kids who come from dysfunctional homes. If schools could be thought of as safe places for all the kids wouldn't that discourage bullying and unify them?
Very much so. Right now it seems that the dominant mindset is that school is a "microcosm of the real world designed to teach you how it will be."
This only holds, however, as long as people think the world SHOULD be a place where people are judged based on their looks, their willingness to socialize, their gender, who they sleep with, what or who they worship, how much money they have, and all that. People say the world will always be that way, but it's an excuse - the world is made up of people, and short of hurricanes and bear maulings and other forms of natural rather than moral evil, PEOPLE are in control of how good or how bad the world is.
If every school, everywhere in a society, private and public, made an effort to make school a safe place that was more about teaching people how to be sincerely decent towards one another*, how to analyze, how to discuss intellectually and respectfully, and how to make a life for themselves in the future, what do you think the world would look like in a few generations? Yes, there would be anomalies. Sometimes the viewpoints of dysfunctional families would win out over the teachings of the schools. And sometimes there would just be socio- and psychopaths that environmental factors failed to explain or control. However, it would definitely be better than the current model of "kids will be kids, and you'd better get used to it, because you as you are deserve no better and this is how you'll be treated for the rest of your life until you learn to be like everyone else."
It's worth trying something, because the system we have now fails and throws away worthy, productive people while rewarding vicious individuals who will take such patterns to mean that they deserve to profit from other people's misery. Even a somewhat imperfect system that aims for as close to perfection as possible is better than a system that settles for mediocrity.

*This is as opposed to the fake "politically correct" sort of decency in which people are forced to be nice to one another not as equals, but just because they're of certain groups, and does nothing but create resentment and acceptable targets.
I've posted about this before, but I believe schools are set up to encourage bullying. You are not sent to school past the age of 11 to learn anything - once you can read, write and do basic maths you can figure the rest out yourself from books if are so inclined. No, schools are there to instil social conformity. And if you can not or will not conform, you will be punished mercilessly, by both the kids and the adults. I even think that, covertly, some schools pride themselves on their 'high standard' of bullying - if the bullying makes you 'knuckle down' and be a nice conformist, then great; if it destroys you then you're not worth anything anyway.
Group education is brutal, sick and depressing. As you can see from the society it produces.
