I guess I don't take the word spectrum too literally, so I don't see it as implying one-dimensional variation. (Though, other times I find myself being more literal than folks posting here. :))

I guess I picture the autism spectrum as going through the various "named" disorders (yes, like a number line) with the added dimension of severity of each (for an individual person), giving the look of a number line with a wavy top. I think the problem for me is that each of these categorized things is a multidimensional entity to me, intersecting at various places not representable on a flat surface. As lexis and KingdomOfRats' exchange points out, it seems to depend on what you are trying to represent by the spectrum. It does seem very liable to misinterpretation regarding the functionality of a given person.
