I did not get a tank or pension with mine....not even a lousy t-shirt.

they were giving away TANKS? awwwww. . .I didn't get one either. I would live in it and plant flowers in the gun turrets, and when I melted down I would blow up stuff instead.

Naaah, my parents went and paid all that money, and all I get is a lousy IEP.

Well... you *did* ask...

Second that Merle... Wouldn't have minded one of those at all, combined with self-understanding, I think your future is going to be 'brighter.'

I doubt the "youngsters" with AS have it any easier today.

Not much has changed, as "normal" people still won't accept the odd and eccentric person who only talks about one thing; some find their [social] place with understanding "NTs", but the majority still won't have a social place. There may be an improvement in academic performance, but this has never been much of a problem for people with AS. There'll be better understanding at work [where applicable], but the social segregation will still be there.

Until "NTs" start seeing that people who're socially atypical aren't a threat to them, nothing will change.

They threw a pension in with mine. (I was hoping for a tank.)

LOL! I wanted a bazooka. All I got was a lousy ex-husband and a t-shirt.

Congratulations, and welcome to the club!

Yep, and my parents, along with a pushy counselor, removed it last summer 'cause they didn't want it on my college transcript. *sigh*

Now I'm just the strange gal with the baseball cap and the nose in the book for the entire 8 hours of school.

the NTs are not going to change you know. They don't have to, and frankly, they are hard wired into social expression and I don't know if they CAN change.

And I take exception with the idea that the 'youngsters' (your word, not mine) with AS have it 'no easier'. At least you can wave a piece of documented paper at them when they want to corporally punish you for being "willful, wayward or incorrigible". They won't confine you in an institution with truly mentally ill folks and drug or electroshock you into submission and 'normality.'
I would take shunning and disdain from NTs any day over those barbaric measures they did on the 'oldsters' in our group.

Just because you don't know anyone that had those 'treatments' applied vigorously to their undiagnosed AS person doesn't mean it didn't happen, Daniel. Sorry if your whinging about how the rest of the world has to change to accommodate us has me on edge this morning.
