Asperger's is 1 in 250

Of note, they say most adults who weren't diagnosed with AS usually ended up with a Schizophrenia label. So, they were still in the mental health system, they just had a different label.

Probably depends on where you live.

I'm the only 20-year-old person with a type of 'HF' ASD in my city that I know of. About 160.000 people live here.

I'm probably reading your statement too literally, but I find it hard to comprehend the notion that out of 160,000 people in a given area that you're the only one (with one other possible) with HFA in your community. I'm sure if all 160,000 residents were tested, the number would be much, much higher.

It was meant literally.

I'm the only one about my age (18-25 or so) I know of because I'm the only person my age who is in contact with the ASD centre in this area.

Nobody else my age is/was in contact with the ASD centre that's usually involved when an autistic person is diagnosed and/or in question to receive any kind of ASD-related help or just wanting to get into a sort of self-help group.

If others were screened for AS, then maybe there would be more people. However, I'm currently one of the 'utmost hf' diagnosed in my city and close-by cities. And compared to people on here on WP I don't present as the most mild. More like, in-between AS and classical.

There are some adult self-help groups around this country though, but I don't know how many older people with AS there are because I don't want to go there.

Oh, I understand what you're saying now. You're the only one *officially diagnosed* in your area. I still think there has to be a few more, but perhaps they haven't yet contacted the ASD center that you mention? I don't blame you for not wanting to go to the self-help groups. I haven't had very good experiences with the few I've been to, either.

Well, in my church at the late service there are between 20 and 50 or more in the evening and there are two spectrumites, myself with AS and a lovely man with autism, not sure which kind, but he is more affected/noticeable than myself; that would make it about 1 in 20 there!

However, when we both turn up at morning service where there are many more people, that makes it less prevalent, though I would expect that we have more undiagnosed or unknown spectrumites among us; that could make it say 1 in 50 to 100, however our church has around 600 members, so if we are the only two, then we are 1 in 300 approx. Now, I believe there are probably more if you take into account some children may have it and not be diagnosed yet, not to mention the adults who fell through the net growing up, so it could be say 1 in 150. Aha, now that is probably more realistic :D

Dunno basically :? :D

Bump old thread. I heard 1 in 110 have autism, and 1 in 300 have Asperger's.

Someone above mentioned that AS is more common than LFA, which would mean the above doesn't make sense.

What's the real answer: -
1. Frequency of people with autism?
2. Frequency of people with Asperger's?

I don't have Aspergers, but I do have classic autism (was diagnosed with Aspergers first).

In response to the last post:
I have read before that currently more people are diagnosed with classic autism, but that there are actually more with Aspergers out there--they just haven't been diagnosed yet.

I'm the only Aspie in my area (as far as I know), the only Aspie in my family (apart from a distant relative who I've never met before), and was the only Aspie at school, out of over a thousand children. OK, I think there was one other Aspie, but he was older than me, and so left after a year of me being there. So I suppose there are a few Aspies dotted around, but otherwise, I'm practically the only one in my life.

I wish I was an NT who never heard of AS or Autism, or just faintly knew about it but never had to think about it at all because I never had to deal with it! You can only wish, can't ya.

If anyone wants to take a look, Wikipedia has an article on the epidemiology of autism!

It's full of "maybe"s and "estimation"s though.

Back in my day, one would be more likely to encounter a shiny Pokemon, but now, I heard that it was much higher.... is that a good or a bad thing? Anyway, despite this, it seems to be the same where I live... there are like only like 2 or 3 people here with AS, and it's not like they even know me...

its common here, but the male vs. female ratio is staggering, so unless I become gay, I'm screwed.

there are programs that help us out, though but a lot of the NT people, esp. females tend to talk down to me which feels insulting.

I hear its 1 in 110 but I also heard its 1 in 150. Do we really know how common it is?

Were I'm from an autism specialist said that Asperger's is mainly missdx in my area as Borderline PD and Schizophrenia and that Asperger's would show behavioural patterns that shrinks are only used from Borderline PD and Schizophrenia (self injury, no eye contact etc.) So from the outside to many shrinks having no experience with HF forms of ASD it looks more or less like a combination mainly of Borderline PD and Schizophrenia. 8O

The numbers of ASD vary between 1:150 and 1:88 so far I'm informed.
Also in the studies I read deviding between HFA and AS the ratio is: around 1:10, meaning that AS is around 10 times more common than HFA.

Asperger's syndrome is a rare disorder.
