Have you ever been bullied about your special interest? That is why I have stopped being so open because people threatened to kill me and my rabbits (which were my obsession at the time). I am more open now as I get older about my special interest in languages, but I am still kinda embarrassed about my previous obsession with crisp packets... don't ask...

Also, I wouldn't put myself on facebook because I don't want any employers 'researching' me.

I'm pressing myself to remember if I ever have been, since it seems like a logical explanation for feeling embarassed about my interests, but I'm pretty sure I haven't. It's been that long since I actually spoke about any of them openly with anyone. The closest thing to a negative reaction was maybe disapproval from parents about being so obsessional about things.

I used to hide my model Routemasters from my dad, than the day of my sister's wedding, he saw me put 50 of them under the bed in the spare bedroom. I have them all over my apartment, now.

My special interests are Star Wars and Transformers. However its not those parts that I tend to keep hidden from most people, its the fact that I am mainly obsessed with only a few parts about each of them, that I keep hidden. In Star Wars I am mostly obsessed about one character, which is Darth Maul. In Transformers, it is the Seeker trio (Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp) that I love to think about.

I love to think, draw, write stories, and read about these characters, but its like I feel like I am opening up myself to possible ridicule when I talk about them and how much I like them. And its hard when I talk about them to not want to go on and on about them, so I try to not talk about them much.

Unfortunately whenever I try to go online to find special sites and stuff to talk about these characters, the sites that come up on my computer tend to be hardcore fangirl sites, and I don't want to go there.

I am such a hypocrite!

I was telling my boyfriend just last week that I don't care what people think about my special interests, but reading this thread has made me realize I've been hiding my new interest in math because I'm afraid of all the questions and strange looks I'll get if anyone sees me doing algebra problems when I'm not attending a school.

I think I'll take my algebra book to work tomorrow.

I don't hide my special interests.. and there is nothing "embarrassing" about it either. I just know to not talk about it often because thats a no-no for social situations! I know enough to realize that people don't want to hear about me talk about lions or polar regions all the time :D I just go with the flow and ask them how their day was and whats happening in their lives.. and half the time I let it go through one ear and out the other!
