I think these work because the human brain will try to find patterns in visual objects. These stereograms have so many possible combinations, and our brains switch between the different "organizations" very rapidly because there is no stable combination or pattern. These images with pictures in them are made so that our brains will eventually organize them into a pattern that looks like a picture. If the human brain tries to organize something with multiple colors or that is moving, it gets confused and tries to organize it so fast that it "glitches" and affects other areas of the brain, sometimes profoundly. Click here to see what it feels like when your brain tries to organize something that is nearly impossible to organize (WARNING!).

Don't do it if you have epileptic seizures, thats crazy o.O

I can see them if I put my nose right on it then back up keeping my eyes unfocused. When I see it my eyes lock onto it. I don't like putting my face right up to the computer screen though.

I remember people having on there desk a magnet with iron filings and you could make shapes with the filings. The images to me usually look like they are made of those iron filings most of them the same color.

They don't look that great.

The technique can be used on Oculus videos found on YouTube. It seems to work best on smaller screens like iPods. An example:
