I had a conversation like this today, with someone I don't know all that well, though we see each other regularly.

Her: Yesterday was my birthday. I had dinner in the city with my family.
Me: Oh, it was my mom's birthday too.
Her: What did you do?
Me: We went out for dinner.
Her: Did you have a good time?
Me: Yes.

Was I taking her questions too literally? Should I have volunteered more information about what I ate, or asked questions about her evening?

What shirt is that you're wearing?

"A shirt. Why?" (Wondering why he asked a stupid question)

I'm sort of new to the term and it seemed to be a really stupid question to ask. Some aspies are bad at small talk, but I don't know what it is.

I define small talk as unscripted communication with no purpose.
