From where I stand that is one of the big differences between us and them. Regular people actually composes their thoughts in 'words' and 'think' about things. I imagine that many of us don't really use the same process and we 'ponder' in our minds using a different format which is extremely hard to recompile back into words when we have to communicate something. The spoken word is not actually our best way of communicating which is why so many find different outlets of expression. It can be very frustrating.

Sometimes I combine words together.

For example, let's say I mean to write "dog run". Sometimes I get ahead of myself and just combine them into something like "doun"

Also I have a problem of continuing a conversation with what I feel is relevant to the conversation, and then I find out that it was completely off topic. I just get so ahead of myself in thinking that I'm 10 steps ahead of where the conversation actually is at that point in time.

I think on two tracks. There's the holistic, non-sequential track, which deals with a problem all at once. And then there's the track that goes back and solves things the long way, sort of analyzing the first track and making it pretty. Because words are nice, even if the nucleus of my thinking doesn't use them.

My words tend to come out right, except that if a sentence has too many pronouns I'll mix them up, which I think normal people don't do. Also if the idea I'm thinking of has two perfectly good synonyms, sometimes both of those words will try to come out at the same time and I'll end up with some horridly mangled neologism.

But then you'd need to memorize thousands of symbols... and keyboards would get completely unusable...

How do you deal with it?

I just have to organise and simplify how I communicate. I try to prioritise what is most relevent and necessary. That's really not so difficult because I'm not much of a talker anyway, so I hardly ever ramble unless I'm really excited about something.

But often my responce comes out too slow, especially when I can think or see the concept in my head immediately, but the right words have to be searched for, and organised into syntax in such a way that the other person gets close to the same visual or concept that I have. I'm just not great at communicating. Practice is the only thing that seems to help, but since I don't choose to be around alot of different people I don't get much real time practice. That's probably why I like internet discussions. It forces me to practice translating and simplifying my thoughts, and focusing them in one direction.

My thoughts are MUCH faster than what I can express verbally, even taking 100MG of Seroquel every night. However, I type about 110 WPM which helps keep track of my thoughts. One funny thing: many off the shelf keyboards cannot keep up with that typing speed which sometimes leads to interesting results when I am on a roll. (Even better when I am on a bun, served up medium rare with butter, sour cream and bacon. )

I think often quite fast and it is not in words, the way I think is in a kind of different things being what they are related to, like a list of related subects, but to put things into words I have to slow it down and try to turn the thoughts into there proper words. I also have problems with mixing words, leaving them out, or at times I might use words that to normal seem to have no conection, and make no sense, but may be to me under related subjects.

Yes, definitely. And like others are saying, this is why I much prefer writing to speaking.

One thing I have found has helped, though, is to write a journal of my thoughts and feelings every day, because I do not always think to put things into words. Once I've put them into the written word, I am better able to express who I am and what I think in the spoken word, because I have already found words to do so.

Speed of visual thoughts topic

I wonder if this is an aspie thing and something to do with visual processing. Perhaps not, but what capriwim wrote applies to me, a visual thinker.

I read somewhere the speed of neuronal firing is quite high. Writing helps to stream the thoughts through a "channel" that organizes those electrical flashes. Seeing thoughts on paper is a sort of external hard drive storage. I have honed my writing talents over the years in order to better structure my ideas to be more comprehesible to others.

Yes me too, I find writing easier than speaking. This is also why I have a tendency to interrupt while someone is speaking to me. It's hard.

Oh yes. My mind can have a complete idea of something, it's just that my mouth can't explain it and my words get stuttered.

I skip words a lot. Once when I was reading something to somebody they stopped me and asked what the heck I was talking about. He then read what I was reading and pointed out that I was skipping words when I read out loud. I have to work really hard to not skip words when reading out loud now. When I read without speaking I still skip words. Kind of a form of speed reading I guess. I read like every 2nd or 3rd word.

Something else I do is drop whole sentences. I'll be talking to somebody and swear I've told them something but they are clueless. However, in my mind I said it. It's happened enough with different people for me to know that someone is not pulling my leg. Now I have to be careful with that too and really make sure that I actually tell the person what I want them to do or what ever.

Most definitley. My thoughts are always racing, so when I speak I stutter, leave out words, say things wrong. Writing is marginally better, but as my thoughts get more hurried my writing gets sloppier.

I also stumble on my words when I talk fast, and it all comes out like gibberish. Or I just cant think of an important word that is needed to explain something that is on my mind.
