There was an outburst at my aspergers group.

Sounds to me as though the substitute wanted to try a little too hard and missed the basics; understanding the people she will be around...

I love the way things go, doesn't matter what happens, regardless of who you are or what ever mental issues you may have, if you hit someone, it's down a aggravated assault ... Maybe it's time to look at the picture in a human perspective compared to event only

That doesn't mean a mental disorder is an excuse. If you know your brain makes you likely to hit somebody, you'd better be working on it, or it's just as much your fault as if your brain were exactly average.

Sounds awful. :( Poor guy. :( I hope that never happens to the AS group I go to.

THis aspie groups run by a mental health center, and i believe they thought its ok to put aspies in mental wards.

I would not go to any group meeting run by a mental health center for the very reason they may be looking for people to lock up.

I've never heard of a AS group being run by a therapist anyway. Ours are run by people in the community. We've had several incidents where the same guy gets hostile screaming or else won't shut up talking nonsense for over a hour. I think they should call the police on him because he WON'T leave, but instead they do nothing and we are all forced to put up with this nut (whom I personally think doesn't have AS).

I have never heard of an AS group but it does sound as if the therapist wasn't very good and aggraveted the situation, but maybe the cops would of had to been called. Luckly it ended ok and no one was arrested or hurt. BTW whats is an AS group and how would I join one?

He may have AS and additional issues...

I've never seen anybody get hostile in either of the AS groups I've attended. The worst we've had has been times when a group leader had to interrupt a monologue or make the talkative people let a shy one get a word in edgewise. It's been quite civil.

The therapist failed in this case.

Completely and utterly failed. It should not take a great deal of intelligence to see the senselessness of refusing the request, the scope for unnecessary distress or harm in refusing it, and to make the obvious decision to reasonably (and with no particular cost to anyone involved) accommodate the very real needs arising from this person's particular impairments.

Nobody at my group is desperate either. We just kind of go because it's nice not to be the only weird one in the room. Actually, we probably go for the same reason people hang out at Wrong Planet.

I went once, just to see what everyone else with an ASD looks like (and I was also intrigued by a comment by the psychologist who told me that not everyone functions the same as I do there--I didn't know if she meant I was "good" or "bad" compared to them, so I went to see for myself). I didn't talk or interact with anyone (hey, it was the first time, perhaps the fiftieth I may have said something).

I didn't get my answer (I doubt I would have got it no matter how many times I went). Sure, some of them sounded quite odd, some of them talked far too much and far too loudly (Daniel covered his ears), but no one actually looked or sounded better or worse than anyone else to me.

They're pretty unlikely to lock you up in most places because generally the psychiatric facilities are overcrowded...

Why I avoid Asperger's "support" groups.
