I don't mind the uncrowded ones, as long as I can sit by the window and don't have anyone staring at me from the opposite seat.

I'd love to have one day where no-one stares at me on a bus or train. Coming home from work, I usually make the last leg of my journey on a weirdly-scheduled and infrequent minor route, simply because it has few other passengers.

I'm a bit ambivalent about public transport. But since I don't drive a car I'll have to use the train sometimes. I bring a book along and 'I close the curtains' or I'll tend to switch off a bit but that depends on what mood I'm in and how busy or crowded it is. But I think I prefer the train above the car.

I hate being in a closed space with a lot of people.
I'm going mad when there's a lot of noise, and I did get psycho on a bus ; we had to explain to the bus driver that I had a "problem"...
My dad had the most painful shame of his life, I think.

I find public transit awkward/uncomfortable, and I get quite anxious when I take the bus by myself, but I don't get sensory overload and I don't freak out.

My son can't tolerate the noise from buses and trains and he has to wear ear defenders if he rides on them.

I'm the NT one and I can't tolerate taking the subway into the city. It's a confined space and when the train stops unexpectedly, it makes me panic. (basically, i hate cities though).

come to think of it there's one I mind a lot- cheap airlines. I hate them.

no personal space. the air is horrible, makes me feel like a dried out raisin, my eyes itch. and all the noises. the token screaming infant is always somewhere very close to where I'm sitting.

there's always a token idiot using a mobile phone that makes me go bonkers and call him abusive names and then I get told not to use such language in front of the token baby by the air hostess.

and the fact that I have to turn off my iPod at times makes me extremely anxious and gives me a headache.

Yuck.. that reminds me of one time when I was 11 I flew with my mom to visit my grandparents on a cheap flight.. the air was awful and the plane rocked like crazy. I was so traumatized by that experience that during the whole visit I bored my poor grandmother about the same topic! Funny how these experiences affect us... especially back in our childhood.

I've been on air planes where the personal space was so small I hardly had room for my stuff. I can't even stretch my legs out well either and my body cramps up. It's also uncomfortable to sleep. The bigger planes are nicer. Now that was heaven.

I try to avoid crowded buses when I can. I like sitting down and having a view of where the bus is going. I get so paranoid I'll miss my stop. When I have to stand I just try and take it. People push, stink and are loud. Giggling girls on the bus are the worst.
I always have to take the train. I sit on my own with my bags on the next seat. When it gets crowded I move the bags so people can sit down. I always listen to music with big headphones on, cranking the volume loud if people around me are loud. Although lately I've been trying to use the train as my own dating service, haha. I've been on some trains when people get violent. That's when I kind of freak out.
The subway gets to me. The trains that pass are so loud they disorient me.

I'm okay as long as there's no strangers sitting next to or opposite me. And also as long as it's not too crowded. I remember on a holiday to America, we had to use the San Francisco tram and it was horrible because it was so crowded and I barely had any space!

Buses -- Hate them. People coming in and out, staring at me. Worst situation re: absolute strangers sitting and staring at my face. I don't like strangers or people I dislike looking at my face.

Planes -- okay. If the seat is okay. Southwest Airlines in the U.S. has good quality seats covered in leather. Frontier Airlines in the U.S. had the hardest, most uncomfortable seats ever.

Trains -- Okay. Don't thrill me. Don't bother me. I enjoyed riding rails around Europe.

Subways -- Not great, not terrible. Not as bad as buses because they don't seem to stare and look around as much for some reason.

Maybe it's to do with the demographic of either mode? Where I live, the commuter rail system's full of roughnecks, as the rail system mainly serves underclass areas, whilst some inner-city bus routes carry a lot of affluent types who use public transport by choice.

In Germany, I have to ride the trains and subways a lot. I have a big problem with people: namely, because I don´t like to be touched by strangers, I always put my dance bag next to me, so if someone sits down in the next seat and "spreads out" so to speak- (you´d be amazed at how many people do this)- they´ll be touching my bag, not me. Well, you´d be surprised at how many people have gotten angry, or started arguments about this! I guess they expect me to put the bag on the floor, or on my lap, but then they´d probably touch me. One woman was so upset that I didn´t move my bag, she picked it up and threw it on the floor! I don´t really know what to do when situations like this occur...sometimes people are fine about this, but when I get an idiot next to me, it´s very stressful. But I carry my dance bag with me always, even if I´m not dancing...partly for that reason. I also listen to my ipod, to drown out the other sensory stuff around me...I insulate myself in my own world.

Yeah I do that too, put my purse beside me if I am on the subway but on Friday I had to move it because it was so damn crowded! That was horrible. And she threw your bag on the floor??? What a nerve! Wow... I am sorry that happened to you. She must have obviously been in a very bad mood. Doesn't excuse her for what she did though. The worst that I have gotten was someone just asking me to move my purse away.
