The Great 'NeuroDiversity' Swindle
Why do those who don't want to be cured behave as if they have the right to stop those who do want to, from seeking a cure ?
Because that's exactly what they're doing.
I say live and let live.
Let those who want prenatal screening to avoid having NT children have it.
Allow those who choose to screen out Autism have their choice.
At the end of the day, there'll still be more than enough people who choose to have Autistic children.
But what gives them the right to deny those who don't want them, the option not to have Autistic children ?
In that way, Autism will survive on any merits it may have - rather than by a program of actively enforced denial.
I guess the discussion is about designer-babies then, personally I think it's a very dangerous idea. I don't know how many, but surely alot of people would go for flavour-of-the-year kids, then what would happen to discrimination of people who are not like the norm? And I believe diversity is a very important thing for mankind to work at all.(diversity in the wider context, not just autism)
Because of live and let live.
Cure is a fraud, Neurology cannot be changed.
Cure then claims that through screening DNA Autism can be eradicated.
At least $100 Million have been spent, with no results.
There are several versions of the cure fraud, they all target monies that should be spent on Autistic people, and redirect them to fund raising saleries of NT promoters.
Their main tactic is slander, they produce a false impression of the reality of Autism.
They ignore adult outcomes, and that Autism comes in degrees, affects 10% of the population, and has a long history of being very productive in the arts and sciences.
Cure makes impossible claims for science, altering DNA is science fiction.
Prenatal screening for Autism is also fraud, science fiction, it is not a single gene.
It is not through fraud that the Human Genome is being studied, Billions a year are being spent on real science. Through ethical review most leading research would not accept money from frauds who are exploiting a group they are not members of, and want to exterminate.
Like attracts, so frauds fund frauds in research, such as Metals, Vaccines, being the cause.
Frauds for a Cure are doing nothing but paying themselves well. Along the way they spout slander, lie about science, and gather the very limited funds that should be spent on the lives of real people, to fund some science fiction view of a future, Autism eradicated, and their beach house paid for.
I am against the Cure Fraud for it lies about Science. It lies about Autism. It lies about it's motives and goals.
My largest objection is the propaganda machine run for fund raising uses up the very limited money that could be applied to making the lives of the autistic much better.
Autism Speaks has been spending $10,000,000 a year on themselves. They are a very small group living large on the exploitation of millions of autistic people.
They have no Science, no Cure, only employment through Fraud.
Their existance promotes other frauds, Chelation, driving out Demons, and their propaganda leads to the mistreatment of Autistic people.
Now, if you have some Science that can withstand peer review, please post it.
In many ways, I agree with you.
HOWEVER, I don't agree that it's right to deny a cure to living Autistics who want one.
And that's why I think it profoundly immoral that anyone should block the development of a cure for Autism.
It says 'I don't care how much you're suffering, I don't care how low your quality of life may be'.
Surely, caring about one another is what it means to be a human being ?
Of course if the number of autistics were miniscule less research on treatment of symptoms would be done and awareness in the general population would be reduced making life harder for the autistics that are out there.
It is a race condition. Attitude and teaching infrastructure vs prenatal screening knowledge/tech. Fortunately there is lots of room to stay out ahead of the prenatal screening tech because the problem domain is very complex technically and ASC, in spite of some Eeyores claiming otherwise, is interwoven very tightly with a series of traits that society as a whole already sees as a very beneficial aspect to humanity. It will be a long, long time before there is an accurate pre-25 week screening of any feasible use ... which is why "eradication" and "cure" are ... I guess you can copy-paste Inventor's post in here.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
All that money spent, and at the end of the day no results when just a minute amount of it could have gone to an autistic person who is in need of a communication device, staff to help run errands, clean their house, or any other accommodation an autistic person may need.

Would you screen your baby for autism? Would you marry an aspie?
If they could screen the baby they wouldn't know if the baby is high functioning and perhaps would be born a genius or if the child would be "ret*d".
Even if you had your "perfect" baby, things can always go wrong later. Life is full of surprises.

No kidding! I have a friend who has a special needs son. Not because he was born autistic, but because a bus slammed into the side of their car. Yet her, once NT, son now acts much like my Autistic children.
I know many on the Curebie side really feel for their children, or themselves, whichever the case may be. But let's put this in perspective. Are you asking for a magic pill? If so, what will that magic pill do? Are you wanting to get rid of the comorbids (such as mental retardation, or sensory integration, or anxiety, or depression)?
The way I see it, the issue isn't about whether someone is autistic or not, but what their functioning is.
Also, are you confident that putting money to finding a cure is better spent while millions suffer because of inadequate funding? I may be an Aspie, but I also have a MFA son and AS son (as I usually make a point to note). My school district can't even help my children with adequate services to help them gain life skills, social skills, and in the case of my youngest language skills.
I'm sorry, but as much as I'd love for future generations to have the possibility to a cure if they so chose, I'd much rather have HELP with my children to be successful in life. I'm not asking them to be normal, I'm just asking them to be happy and successful in whatever they so chose!
More like grateful. AS seems like a cognitive boon to me. Neurotypicals seem, from my indignant and uncompassionate perspective, to have ADHD in contrast to me. May as well ask me if I'd like a cure for abnormally great sexual endowment. No, thanks.

Reality is the one denying [you] a cure, and shaking your angry fist at it isn't going to change it's mind.
I'm not 'shaking my fist' at reality.
I'm shaking it at all those who seek to obstruct the search for a cure.
They have no moral justification for doing so - particularly since they don't know how beneficial it would be to sufferers of Autism.
For that, I cannot castigate them.
But for their stubborn refusal to consider the moral aspects of doing so, I find myself outraged and will continue to shake my fist in their general direction until they begin to face the moral issues it raises.

Then you think it's moral to let others suffer with Autism now, for the chance at a cure later? That's all I'm asking for. Divert some of that funding to help people with Autism now.

How are the two mutually exclusive ?
And even if they were, I'd still think it right to skew funds in favour of a cure.
Why ?
Because there's a finite number of Autistics ATM - but the future holds BILLIONS more.
Simple maths : help millions now - or billions later.
Being born after us doesn't justify discrimination against them.

Oh, believe me.. I wish the two weren't mutually exclusive. But let's face it, there's a finite amount of funds available. If there are being 100s of billions per year on research for a cure, imagine what only 10 billion per year of that could do for living people. It's immoral to do otherwise, yet, it's what is happening.
Not only are the two types of fundings mutually exclusive, but the "cure" research will never reach any results without accepting the reality of ASCs, which is that there is a personality aspect that many Autistic people call neurodiversity. The only thing the cure money can lead to in absense of real understanding are prenatal tests, which will lead to Autistic genocide. You'd better face this reality. The current cure research will not lead anywhere since it is misguided and builds on false premises.
Additionally, there is absolutely no support for any increase in Autism, on the contrary, according to Aspie-quiz data, the Autistic personality-type seems to decrease about 1% per year. Very soon the diagnostic ratio will hit the "roof" because there is no more people to diagnose, unless psychiatry broadens critieria even more and includes the broader autism phenotype as well. Therefore, a cure today will not prevent anything in the future, and the best "cure" is understanding, especially from the point of view of society and the costs of diagnosis.
Reality is the one denying [you] a cure, and shaking your angry fist at it isn't going to change it's mind.

Well yes, in your state of denial that is how you see it. *shrug* You heap your scorn on the messenger because you don't like the message...from Reality.
