I also have contradictions, though in a slightly different vein. I sometimes enjoy emotion in an artistic setting but not so much when it comes to ordinary people in ordinary life. I like dramatic gut-wrenching tear-jerking movies but I can't make myself feel happy for a friend getting married. I just can't make myself care about that stuff. Maybe this is a guy thing as much as anything else. I don't know.

I also have the thing where I experience extreme emotions with very little room in between.

same here.

I can logically analyse my emotions, but not while I'm actually experiencing them. My mind is very mono, so I can't do things simultaneously. While I'm experiencing the emotions, then I can't analyse them.

Yes, same here. A combination of issues managing multiples and an extreme emotion makes for huge difficulties rationalizing your own feelings.

The way that I make inferrences (sp?) as to one's emotional state follows thus:

Person A is displaying behavior set B in situation C. Based on my past experiences and knowledge of person A, he/she is probably experiencing emotional state D.

Are you happy to be non-empathetic Nothingunusual?* I had no empathy for a long time. I tried to understand how empathy works and force myself to feel it. I don't know if that worked, but a few years ago I found some after falling head over heels in love. It didn't work out great for me though, I had so much empathy I became very guilty about my nice position in life. After reading enough about poverty in developing countries, I volunteered in Kenya to ease my white man's guilt. TERRIBLE IDEA. I broke down over there and even worse when I came back home.

I had to forget about empathy for a while. Since then, it comes and goes, in what seems to me like a pendulum pattern. Eventualy it'll finish swinging and settle somewhere around 'normal.' I hope. Right now, I don't have much empathy for anything.

I don't know if this is connected to ASDs but I think something like empathy fluxuates throughout your life. Do you have mothering instincts? Have you been in love?

*I think this is the last time I'll be able to address you by your forum name. It puts too much ambiguity into the sentence for me to handle.
