I have a bit of trouble with it, too. It has to do with the decision of who goes first when there's a car. I don't like to feel like I'm intruding on the situation, so sometimes I will approach the intersection when the cars are gone. Even at intersections with stoplights I will hurry across quickly even though I have the right-of-way.

I don't drive, but a lot of that is to do with the fact that I'm scared to. I mean, I can't cross the road properly, imagine what I'd be like behind the wheel of a car, especially at roundabouts. I get confused at roundabouts as a passenger, so I'd probably get stuck at one if I was driving. Driving seems very complicated. Not the actual driving of the vehicle, just all the signs, signals, cars, pedestrians, unexpected roadworks or closed roads you've got to follow. Several times when I've been in taxis, we've come across an unexpected detour or closed road. I'd probably panic in a situation like that. I can't follow directions for the life of me and unexpected things make me nervous.

You should be scared. Everyone wrecks their first car, so get something cheap but sturdy. Don't buy a new car for your first if you do eventually drive. About 10 years ago I would experience a lot of the same difficulties you describe, but now that I have ~200000 miles experience things aren't so bad but I still hate unexpected detours. People here have trouble with roundabouts because the roundabouts are just starting to become more common here.

Can I just say that there are idiots, both on the roads and in the street.

I have seen cars that haven't stopped at crossings even when the lights have shown red.

I've seen pedestrians talking on their cellphone or crossing when the traffic's in full flow just because their friends are all crossing and they think it's "cool".

Impatience and lack of attention: that's how accidents happen.
I've seen/heard about accidents where cars haven't stopped at the lights on red or people have crossed on a green light.

"Playing chicken" with the traffic just because it's "socially acceptable"?
The risk just isn't worth it.

That's why I follow the "Green Cross Code" "to the letter" and am vigilant at crossings, even if others think I look strange or honk their horns at me. I for one don't want to end up dead and a "human pancake".

I'd much rather be late for something than "The Late Amber".

Wow, I thought I was the only one who had this! I'm terrified to cross the road, even if it's a small one with no traffic.

Crossing roads is where I really notice my tendency to look at objects before people. When I want to know if a car is going to move or wait, I don't look through the windshield at the driver, I look at the bumper. I realize that I do this. I know in the moment that I'm doing it. But I can't seem to stop doing it.

Yeah, I was nearly run over in October 2007. Here's the funny thing too; I have trouble turning my head in public for some reason I'm not sure why. Anyways, I think the traffic thing has something to do with skewed spatial perception, I have trouble merging while driving as well as it is difficult for me to gauge the distance of a oncoming traffic.

am oblivious to roads/cars/paths etc,and see them all as one part, find the idea of seperate path and road difficult to understand and process, also have no danger awareness,am restraint walked most places.

what about second? sister and her boyfriend first bought a newish pegeut? together [the small pegeut, black],her boyfriend wrecked it beyond repair-not his fault,he said he was smashed into by a driver through red at a crossing but it took insurance people a long time to sort out money for a new one, sister wrecked their next car-a newish black renult clio when she was driving through the tesco car park in middle brook, horwich on a very rainy day and skidded and smashed into some blocks,AA told her three other drivers had done the same that day in the car park and it had been due to oil spil on the ground.

their newest one is a decent newish ford fiesta,no crashes yet, theyre crap for space if have to sit in the back and are tall but its a good smooth drive like the focus.

Oh yes the challenge of crossing a road.

When I was in junior school I was attempting to cross the road and I didn't look to the left. This red porsche with good brakes came to a stop so quickly, I rested my hand on her car as if to rest!
I almost wished I had been run over, as I entered my mums car in the lot across the road she proceeded to strangle the living s**t out of me.

The second incident involved my grandmother telling me to "GO GO" with a dump truck hurtling towards me. In fact she was saying "NO NO".

I have to say that the fear of crossing roads has stayed with me and will do for the rest of my life.
