I tend to catagorzie everything. It helps make the world make sense to me. So when I first found out that my boys were on the spectrum (after 20+ years), it threw me for a loop. I thought I knew where they--and I--fit in with everyone and everything else. Even though this new knowledge didn't change who they were, it changed my view of our world.

Then I found out that I have Asperger's also. I have been lost ever since. I had this image of myself---where I fit in, who I was, how others saw me--and now I realize that I was mistaken all along. A lot of stuff makes sense now. That is kind of a relief, just to know that I am not a weirdo and not a dummy. But still, now I have to consider where I belong again. It seems I have always been looking for home. I found it with my husband (who also has Asperger's) and our boys, and thought I had found it in my workplace and maybe a bit in my community, but maybe not? Maybe I only really belong with my little family. I guess that would be quite all right.

To me, everything made more sense, became more illuminated, memories of other times could be interpreted better and I became well on my way to tackling several of my problems. It really helped.

Why do you say you're a jerk?

Most people who only know me casually seem to think I am something of a jerk. It's "classic*" Asperger's: I'm too quick-to-the-point and matter-of-fact; little if any patience for "pleasantries" and a complete disregard for policies that don't seem to make a lick of sense.

Well, if that's the criteria for being a jerk, there are alot worse things you could be! I'd say these traits held more positives than negatives, but I'm biased. 8)

the stage of acceptable social appropriatness can be sensitive and far from logical.
