Hehe that's OK, I tend to skip words a lot myself :P

If any of you have ever seen 21, a film released last year about college kids from Harvard that count cards, the main character I think has AS. The "punky kid" from the group even mentions Rain Man and calls him ret*d, and then the main character (Ben) just kind of looks away, like the filmmakers are trying to send in a subtle hint...

I've been meaning to watch 21.

I know Rain Main was based on Kim Peek but who was the other person? The autistic one.

If you mean Kim Peek who the Rain Man was based on, he wasn't on the spectrum at all.

The real one, yes, but Raymond in the movie was based on several individuals with autism, as well as the special abilities of Kim Peek (a portion of those with Autistic Disorder have such). His depiction of HFA is dead on as far as I can discern.

a bollywood (Indian) movie. I believe a lot of people outside of south asia watch bollywood movies. not all Indian movies are bollywood

wow did not know it was based on a true story.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Name_is_Khan

My Name Is Khan is an upcoming 2009 Indian drama based on a true story.[3] It is directed by Karan Johar, produced by Dharma Productions, has a screenplay by Shibani Bathija, and stars Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan [4] and Kajol. The musical trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composed the film's score.[5] Cinematography is by Ravi K. Chandran. [6]

The film is slated for a November 2009 release.[2]

Plot

Rizwan Khan (Shahrukh Khan) is a Muslim man who suffers from Asperger syndrome (a form of autism which impacts social interaction abilities). Authorities detain him after mistaking his disability for "suspicious" behavior.[7][8] His wife is portrayed by Kajol (who won the role over Kareena Kapoor).[9][10][11]

[edit] Production

[edit] Director

Director Karan Johar has described the "message" of the film as being "in strong support of humanity, which at the end of the day is the only way to rise above any of the cultural or religious differences that continue to engulf us."[12] In addition, during an interview with Johar, journalist Madhureeta Mukherjee (referring to the prevailing post - 2008 Mumbai attacks atmosphere in India) stated, "My Name is Khan starts at a time when Hindus and Muslims in India have united like never before." In response, Johar stated: "I think it’s an exceptionally relevant time, as the unity of our nation is of paramount importance, and I am very happy to witness such a movement in front of my eyes. We are all coming together to fight for a common cause – called humanity. Everyone knows that terrorism has no religion and it will never have a religion. As a filmmaker, I believe that I have a social responsibility and I promise to fulfil that." [13]

[edit] Filming

Filming began in Los Angeles on 15 December 2008. [12][14] One of the locations used for the film was UCLA.[15] The film faced a setback during late December when actor Aamir Bashir was denied a visa to the United States. He was eventually replaced by Jimmy Shergill as Shahrukh Khan's younger brother. [16] After filming in Los Angeles was completed, Johar stated that, "in all my 11 years as a filmmaker I’ve never felt the experience to be so different. The content of My Name is Khan is diametrically opposite to whatever I’ve done in the past."[16] He described working with both Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol again as "magic. They build an inexplicable energy on screen." Johar also stated that he was "blown away by Shah Rukh" who had done "done monumental research on his autistic character in the film. I was zapped by how much he knew about the subject."[16]

Bollywood Hungama surveyed the most anticipated Bollywood films of 2009 in January of the same year. My Name is Khan ranked number one for Top 20 movies, Top 10 movies for UK, and Top 10 movies for USA. It ranked number two for Top 10 movies for India. [19][u]

I've printed off all of your responses and I will be adding these films to my Blockbuster queue.

I appreciate the discussion on "Rain Man." I saw it a long time ago but now I'm going to look at it again, only this time with more intelligent eyes thanks to you.

A special thanks to vivinator for the head's up on the upcoming Bollywood film. I will definitely be looking for it when it comes out. For a long time I've been meaning to join one of the nearby stores that rent Indian films but I never got around to it, so because of this film, this year may be the right time for me.

Thank you, everyone. I appreciate it.

An autistic ninja girl named chocolate. Off course why didn't I think of it! It just makes so much sense and she's probably self diagnosed as well to add a little subplot to the story.

I just watched the trailer on youtube, is it me or does thailand/japan/china etc have the weirdest films?

Never Too Young (1951)

Before Aspergers was a diagnosis, but the character played by Jerry Lewis is a stereotypical aspie. It's a good movie to see someone with the traits viewed in a more oddball, comedic, quasi-sympathetic manner.

Hoffman worked with numerous individuals with autism to get the depiction that's seen in the movie.

It's not a film, but Daniel Tammet has a new book out; Embracing the Wide Sky.

I've been meaning to check that out, actually. I listened to the BBC podcast where he was a guest and it sounded interesting.

heck, I should've scrolled down the page before I made a separate thread about Paradox Lake :?

anyway, it's a very low-budget, quirky film about a summer camp for autistic kids. strange but good.

A couple not mentioned already:

Her Name is Sabine

David and Lisa - A 70's movie about a relationship between two people on the spectrum. Lisa is identified as autistic, and David is supposed to have been AS.

A word about this film - it was apparently extremely popular among single men, especially older single men, many of whom would have been Aspies. According to an 80's book about 'love-shyness' which I recommend as an intriguing read, it was far and away the most popular movie amond love-shy men.
