Would you wear, in public, the clothing of Wrong Planet?

Why would I pay for the privilege of advertising a website? If anything, WP needs to pay me to wear one of their t-shirts!

I agree with that as well.

as Fnord would've probably said, if there was any financial compensation I'd consider wearing one

Currently no, as I am not living openly as an Aspie I would say no. I think a short while after I get a job for life and get into a post where I am happy, I will go public. Then I may well wear WP insignia openly.

Perhaps WP should also bring out a pin, a tie, cuff links and a few other more subtle items.

I would not wear one, as I don't like the logo, and don't want to be thought of that way by someone. I would be more comfortable openly talking about my AS than wearing the shirt.

I wouldn't wear one. I don't want to draw any negative attention to myself. I've already gotten enough of that as it is!

Nope. Never. Not even if I was paid to do such. Nothing against Alex, and I appreciate the discussion site he's providing us. I just don't want NTs to know the inherent difference we have with them. If they don't know what it is and they're ever curious, they'd find out with a 2-second google search. That will be bad for any aspies that the NT currently knows or meets in the future. NTs are always looking for scapegoats. NTs are always looking for someone else to do the difficult work for them. NTs will always find someone to help ruin an aspie's desireability. NTs are always looking to get away with evil. Don't invite these problems on yourself.

I have AS, and I cherish it. I will not proclaim it to the world. I don't live in a micro-universe (where one might feel hopeless enough to try using AS itself as a selling point - it would never work, and you'd have gambled away everything).

When I was a competetive athlete, I refused to wear the shirts and stickers that companies would give me. If I wasn't going to be paid to advertise, I had no desire to do such.

Both of those situations require shrewdness in order to advance yourself. I'd NEVER trade away my aspie self though. That's more valuable than anything.

I might. But I don't plan on buying one.

yes, but a lot of those members are inactive or never were active.

I have one and do wear it often.

So far, lots of comments about the cute/funny/funky-groovy alien guy.

Not one single person asking, "What is WrongPlanet?" No indication that anyone knows what the logo means or that the shirt has anything to do with AS/Autism.

Oh definately! I want to buy the neon green shirt. I should do that soon :chin:

If I can wear Yu-Gi-Oh! t-shirts purchased from the young boy's section as a 19-20 year old female, I can do anything!!

I can't remember what the t shirt says right off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure it just advertises Wrong Planet, calling it a resource site for Asperger's. Wearing a shirt isn't implicitly admitting you have AS, it's just advertising a web site. Here's a plan.
What to do...buy a WP t shirt and wear it and gauge people's reaction to it. That way you can test the water. Are the people saying stuff like "OMG that's scary can you imagine having something like that" then you don't admit to having it, just say "I am a supporter of the site I think they do good work".
Or, do they say "Wow that's interesting. Are they all savants? Neat. Tell me more!" Well, if that's the case it's a bit more encouraging but keep in mind they will have the interim between visits with you to think it over and decide if they think it's okay.

I wouldn't, because I, too, don't care for the alien. Besides, I have a very cool Asperger's shirt that I wear in public a lot. It's an acrostic poem of the word "Asperger's":
Advanced vocabulary
Sensitive to criticism
Particular topic obsession
Endless talking
Rigid
Gifted
Easily distressed
Remiss
Socially challenged

I love it! It has all of my strongest Aspie traits. I bought it over on http://www.cafepress.com. I love that website. They have tons of geeky shirts with hilarious chemistry and physics puns on them. I have bought many of my chem shirts from there. I just ordered four and they arrived in the mail last week. Anyway, I wear it, because I'm proud of being an Aspie, and I honestly couldn't care less who knows it. I have an OCD shirt that I got over on cafepress.com, too, that I wear a lot: "I have OCD, but it should be 'CDO'- alphabetized."

No.

(I wear the same stuff, and said stuff doesn't include a new shirt, no matter what it says.)

Yes, good point. I have often wondered about this---just how many of us (in this over 24,000 person community) are active? I bet it is a lot smaller number than most of us think.

I saw a response from someone else on this post that was very much against wearing the shirt because of the negativity associated with it and AS. This member does not seem comfortable about discussing their AS. That is fine---each person has a right to do things the way he/she wants. But I have talked to several people I work with, and several others I know, and I have always gotten positive comments about AS---like, "Yes, they are pretty smart aren't they?", or "They are usually quite talented."

My perception on AS/autism is that it is not a disorder, but a difference (which is how many of you view it too). I may be wrong, but I believe that the general feeling of the WrongPlanet community is that it is a neurological difference rather than a disorder.
