"For someone so smart you can be awfy stupid sometimes."

That was what my dad used to say to me whenever we had reconciled from some argument over something I had done which lacked 'common sense.'

He wasn't saying it to be hurtful, but rather as some attempt at humour (because the idea that an intelligent person can do stupid things seems odd and funny to a lot of people [?]).

Of course, other people have said similar things to me while trying to be hurtful.

I've never understood why it is assumed that if somebody's clever they automatically have common sense as well.

common sense

isn't it interesting that 'common sense' means theory of mind.

the DX of AS is we don't tap into that sense that is common to NTs.

I can't remember the times people have looked at me like "I thought you were more intelligent then that." or the few times it has outright been stated. It is so demeaning to have people devalue the other abilities I have simply, because I don't fit into the standard mold.
Anyone else come across this condescending NT attitude?

I find outright refusal to believe that I do not get "it" or did not know better is much more common.

Erm ditto. Most of my higher math teachers and later profs gave me that same look. Math always pulled my GPA down from middle school into university. I had one adjunct fail me, because he thought I wasn't applying myself. Knowing what I know now I would've complained to my advisor in a heartbeat.

I think I have common sense :? other people don't seem to have 'common sense' to me.
My mom always told me I had no common sense growing up.

I don't think I would be as sensitive about it except I have a Anxiety Disorders dx which makes most interactions twice as difficult. If I'm not obsessing then I may have panic over any situation. That leaves very little evergy for actual work and feeling competent.
It has made employment for me near impossible it seems...

i was at a group meeting the other day and when i am about to raise my hand and add something to the discussion i get this pounding in my chest and a ball in my throat. you experience something similar too?

Are you sure you have "common sense"?

Perhaps you have "rare sense" (or as it is alternatively known, "good sense").

Yes I do. The physical sensations of panic seem to often overide the siuation, the ability to think and respond as one wishes. That is truely what makes me upset about Aspergers as in that with many of my interactions people do not really learn to know me for who I am as a person. They only see the symptoms as start assuming which usually causes me problems :?
