I don't see much proof that he is asperger.

Another problem in throwing people like Mozart and Benjamin Franklin into the Asperger population is that even if a person is in front of them, doctors have a hard time distinguishing between intellectual giftedness, Attention Deficit Disorder and Asperger Syndrome. There has been little research into the personalities of intellectually gifted people, but the few that have been done show that they are often intense, restless, strong-willed, and sensitive to light and sound -- all qualities of Asperger Syndrome. People with very high IQs often question the status quo, resist direction, have long attention spans, undergo periods of intense work and effort, and like to organize things even as children. Other people often perceive them as "different." All this is the same with those who have Asperger Syndrome.

Richard Stallman is obviously gifted, even profoundly gifted. Being so much more advanced that his peers and his difficulty to adapt to the divorce of parents as well as the death of his grandparents are more than enough to explain his social isolation. If he had problem with "decoding" the social situations or difficulty to organize, then maybe....

Problems with hygiene for one. And there is lots of suggestion in there that he fails to compromise, or realize that other people have different wants from his. For instance, ordering food for everyone at restaurants.

And sitting at a desk programming in excess of 24 hours is a lot more than a long attention span.

Your statement suggests you believe the portrayal points positively towards autism, you simply wish to be non-committal unless a professional confirms it?

No, it means I basing my opinions on facts, not assumptions

Which is all a "clinical" professional does.

That's fine. Nobody is forcing you to have an opinion or to share one.

If other people want to play a friendly game of pin the label on the famous potential Aspie, it's within their rights to do so. They are just giving their opinion.
