Which is a good enough reason to be against Autism Speaks.
But anyway, please can we return to constructive posts...? Sorry, but I don't consider suicidal posts that constructive.

IDK why you all want to be awkward about this, tbh. In 20 years time you probably wouldn't have been born 'cause of Autism Speaks.

I agree with this... Can someone say something constructive? Am I the only other person who thinks this is a good idea? Or are we all emos on here?

Being depressed/suicidal because of genuine problems is not the same as being emo.

Yes, and damn it, I hate fashion and "cliques" with a total passion.

DeLoreanDude,

I think you mean emotional rather than emo. I don't really feel many emotions other than constant fear, which is due to Autism and which makes me want to constantly end it. There's only so much a mind can take, but mine just keeps on taking it.

So really, it is my greatest achievement that I'm still here, after overwhelming anxiety for 20 something years, and you know the anxiety where you have constant impending doom, that feeling where the next step will be your last with a feeling of 100% certainty?

That beats most people's achievements, really; I see people killing themselves because they felt that doom once in their life, and I feel it every second.

I'm sure there are some people with Autism who'd prefer not to have it.
But in no way does that mean the majority. Autism Speaks is giving off the impression that most people with Autism wish they never had it and like the company/charity. From browsing several sites, neither are true.
EMZ.

I think it's important to keep in mind that autism isn't as positive an experience for some as it is for others. There are members who have significant issues caused by their autism and they might prefer that there were some sort of treatment or 'cure' for those issues/symptoms.

I think it's important that we promote the idea that not everyone with autism is doomed to live an unfulfilled life, but it's important to realize that autism can pose a problem in that regard for others on the spectrum.

^^ true that, so any video or aritcle whatever should be balanced between the good and bad points. As it's not all sunshine and rainbows but neither is it all doom and destruction

True, I think we need a bunch of us on the spectrum to explain this, that way it would be a fair and unbalanced view.

What I would like to see (I have thought about this before) is a video that shows loads of really different clips of people with autism, so that people can see more of the truth. It would show people from all of the spectrum, to show that it's a severe disability for some and just difficulties for others. It would show that autistic people can be happy and productive and loved, but also have meltdowns, can have anxiety/depression and can have problems with making friends and finding work. It would show sometimes people with ASDs seem completely normal, sometimes they are obviously different.

Autism needs to be researched so it can be better understood and so people can find out how to lessen problems like sensory issues and make life better for autistic people. It is not a bad thing to veiw it for what it is: a disorder.

So, yes, make a video. But include danielismyname saying how awful his anxiety is, as well as people who are happy. Just let people learn the truth!

I disagree with the "greatest achievement" bit about the clips. Don't put your greatest achievement; put some traits that gets across the idea that you're an individual--for example, you like to read science fiction, you do gymnastics, you volunteer at the library, you love pineapple pizza... a few like that. Neutral things, things that take you out of the "tragic statistic" category and put you in the category of "person".

Careful, they might see it and decide to sue you or bully you to take it down. A 14 year old aspie did a parody of it by doing "NT Speaks" and they threatened to sue him and take him to court but when they found out his age, they just told him to take it down and they dropped all charges. Then they bullied another aspie when he made a shirt and it said something like "Autism Speaks doesn't speak for me." I don't remember what the shirt said exactly.

The site was restarted again as;
http://ntspeaks.com/
and I've asked for the person they tried to sue to participate in this too.
If this gets popular enough, then I don't see them suing successfully 200+ people and not killing their charity in doing so.
I don't actually think it'll be attacking Autism Speaks anymore anyway, people don't seem to like that idea.

Like Emor said, the site was re-opened and as for the t-shirt, the guy in question replied with this: http://www.aspieweb.net/aspieweb-vs-aut ... -to-speak/ and as you can see, also made a bunch more anti-Autism Speaks stuff.

Also if you look at the site in the original post and click "Lawyers" you can see what he thinks of that, so perhaps we could put a similar (less cocky) version on the video.
