I always catch people smiling and laughing at me because of my flat affect. I wish people would just leave me alone.

No they don't & that's not a bad thing. I wouldn't want a stranger smiling at me, it would seem way too creepy.

No.

They usually return my unreadable stare if they see me looking at them.

I try not to look at strangers. I'm afraid that they'll look back at me.

I have always refrained myself from staring at stuff for a while, as they always seem to notice somehow, but random people in the street that walk past me do seem to smile randomly, and I'v never understood why?! When people say "Hi" or something in the street I never tend to reply (audibly at least) as when I am talking to a stranger I speak very quietly for some reason.

Yes. It makes me feel awkward because they might be smiling because I stand out somehow. But I smile back nevertheless, and although it feels like I smile a lot, I don't know how welcoming my smile looks to other people. And I wonder if my eyes lack emotion as well, which might seem like I'm being cold. But I'm not!

On the outside they may be smiling, but on the inside they are thinking, "Why are you staring at me you creep".

It is not polite to stare.

I get smiled at by strangers sometimes...

I'm trying to teach myself to consistently smile back.

I've never talked about this with anyone before. Whenever I'm out in public I will look around or stare at things that interest me. Sometimes when I fix my gaze in a certain direction there will be a person in my line of vision. If I look at that person for a few seconds they will notice me, make eye contact and smile. This has been happening for as long as I can remember.

Am I the only one that this happens to? Does anyone else get smiled at when they look at a stranger?

Very young children look at me and burst out laughing. Apparently they think I am absurd. Perhaps I am, which is why I do not hold it against them.

They never do with me, It's probably because I look mad a lot. If someone does smile at me, I'd get confused and wonder if they somehow knew me.

Sometimes they do. I particularly hate it when I glance at them for only a second and then they turn to me and smile. I feel like that they think that they caught me staring at them or something similar, when I wasn't.
