Wow this is great! seems i am not alone in being some kind of hybrid!!

I am Darren by the way, i am from the UK, nice to meet you all, was to shy to post before now i wont shut up probably!!

sbcmetroguy:II have AS and ADHD. In fact my ADHD is so bad, I have no idea what your post said beyond the first sentence, besides a random word here and there that my brain picked out for whatever reason. No kidding ... this gets me in trouble every day of my life, not reading what people write to me, not noticing important things in contracts between my company and clients, etc. It reeeeaaaaally screws with me.

Man i am feeling you there, i get that alot and i have to read and re-read etc, eyes jump from word to word... i often misread instruction or messages and GET TROUBEL BIG TIME! haha

maybe though having both is a blessing. i find they can cover up each others weaknesses? does anyone find that they result to self medecation or achohol etc to calm the adhd down..? i find thats very tempting as i feel uncomfortable to be my hyperactive talkative self as it really can annoy people!... i was called annoying master in school, in a affectionate way!! :D

No Darren, you're not alone at all. I have found that, while there may be things I do that others here can't relate with, some of the basic things you will always find someone here who understands. People get angry with me online easily because I miss half of what they wrote. It has nothing to do with me NOT wanting to read it, I just simply can't do it. Even with my obsessions, when reading about them I have problems taking in all the information because I miss half of it. Like you, I have to read and re-read many times over to take in some basic information. All through my childhood I wondered what was wrong with me, but my family was poor and my mother couldn't afford to send me to a doctor to be examined so it never happened.

And by all means, post away. Like you, I love encountering people who are much like myself ... it helps me to understand that I am not a total freak of nature, this type of stuff occurs naturally in many people.

You know strangely enough, I wrote a 20-page document to my psychologist when I was going to be assessed, and before I took it with me I read the entire thing. Now what probably made it easier for me to read the entire thing was that I knew most of what was in it, so my eyes just sped through most of it. I probably wasn't actually comprehending as I was reading it, but most likely as I typed it and it was already locked into my brain when I read back over it.

I did read in a thread here just out of curiosity that people with ADHD tend to be less anti social . often eager to be social?

Perhaps it depends on the individual, but I have ADHD along with AS so I believe that is why I am not very social.

I am eager to be social most of the time. I just seriously lack good social skills. Sometimes after socialising I do have to "wind down" a bit and stay at home for a week or so...

well guess it'd be better to compare ADHD w/o AS to AS'ers w/o ADHD

Funny..when I was assessed as having AS, the specialist said that if I have AS, then I can't have ADD..I was previously diagnosed as having ADD.

From all the time I have spent on the board, I can definitely say there seems to be a difference between AS folk who have ADD traits and AS folk who don't.

I definitely fit into the ADD/AS category.

I am not really so hyper as I am completely muddled. I have special interests that pile on top of one another so that I get bogged down into inertia.
I have severe executive dysfunction and really have a hard time mantaining my environment and staying on top of all the minuta that people are supposed to attend to.

I do blank out when reading....or listening to people speak...and it is really annoying because it happens no matter how hard i try to force myself.

I am somewhat ADD. I need to move around every few hours to expend energy so I can concentrate. My ADD is normally fairly mild, however.

I definitely don't have ADHD. I'm a very calm person, with not a lot of variety of moods, usually the same facial expression and a neutral mood. The only ADHD-ish thing that I do is constantly stimming, but at the same time, I can be very focused. I haven't been really hyper for a while. I do get irritated easily though, and my mind is cluttered with random thoughts, but they are usually connected. I tend to think a lot, and not say or express much.

i have both and am formally dx'ed with both.
it is possible to have both and in fact having both can be quite common.

restless, stimming, skyrocketing anxiety that requires constant monitoring and attention with a program of techniques.
racing thought and random impulsiveness. inability to focus adequately at times.

What about many intense interests that can be rotated around and can sometimes go out of control?

I believe that myself and someone I know exhibit these intense, "erratic" behaviours.

I want to know the same thing. Can you still be considered AS if your interests change up frequently? Or a whole bunch of mini-interests instead of one or two steady or mostly steady big ones?

I stress that these aren't social interests and that one can spark off another.

For instance a recent one I had was something like "Social Skills and Communication Studies", this sparked off one in "the Psychology of Culture, Personality and Non-Verbal Dialects".

I used to have several big academic interests going on in the background.
But now they're gone, I've noticed that the interests have become more erratic and sporadic.

I've also noticed that when I'm under intense stress, the interests jockey for position and I can't always control them.

I used to reward one interest with another in a strict routine, but when the routine broke down or things were unpredictable, I was in trouble.

I've also had several long term ones which can basically be traced back to my spending holidays at the seaside and the fun-fair when I was younger.

That's where all the ride, carousel, roller-coaster, slot machine/arcade, amber and pebble interests derive from.

The carousel sparked off an interest in horses...

You get the idea, it's like a chain reaction linking objects and areas of study together.

My eyes seem to scan around the physical environment and then focus on an object intensely. So intensely sometimes that I can't stop talking about it.

One person I know also seems to show compulsive and impulsive behaviour: he'll buy things on a whim related to current interests.

If it's snowing, he'll buy a sled, even if the snow is only half an inch deep and thaws in the morning.
If he sees a TV show about birds, he'll buy birdseed and all the accouterments.
If I mention something casually, he'll buy me the gear to do with that topic.
If I say my social skills are bad, he'll buy me a whole selection of books on social skills to read alone lol

Once he wanted to draw cartoons...but didn't get round to it...

Etc.etc.

Now our house is full of junk.
I appreciate much of what he buys though.

Are hoarding tendencies more OCD or something else?
There's probably an overlap there too.

Yes, I was first diagnosed AS, then later diagnosed ADHD as well. It's a very very irritating combination, because you have an intense desire to focus on your special interests, but often you find you can't focus on anything for more than 5 minutes. Nothing is more annoying than that. I don't mind the hyperactivity so much, because sometimes it can help me make friends (people like energetic people), and I get invited to parties more cause I'm so crazy I can be entertaining.
