I was always a thoughtful child, and this turned into anxiety and pessimism later. I dont really believe in optimism for myself, it is not the way I think, but I do believe that I can learn to judge others more kindly, and be less critical of others, mistakes, and become more relaxed in general.

It is never too late :) . It isnt too late for your Aspie son either. And if your PDDNOS son faces problems in life, he will find a way to bounce back, his temperament is designed that way.

When I was a little kid I was happy and well adjusted, more like your younger son. During my teenage years I was lonely and got bullied by people, so I became anxious, depressed, and would dwell on losses in the past. In college, I moved out of the area and met more friends, so now I think that I'm somewhere in the middle ground between being pessimistic and optimistic. I view most people as having strengths and weaknesses, with a very rare number of people who are either "all good" or "all bad". Also, I think that people have an unlimited potential of good or evil.

Yes. my default attitude is positive. I have had periods of depression but have always returned to positive after one. I think that's my normal state.

I think that's true, when I've been depressed I feel the world has gone dark and negative but it hasn't changed of course, I was just projecting my mood onto it.

I have always been an optimist. It can be hard sometimes because I always believe people when they say they will do something, so I get disappointed a lot when they do not do these things, even when it is the 10th+ time they have lied I still expect that they might not be lying. I tend not to be upset for long though. Life gets better every year for me after a really crap childhood. :) I am lucky, I guess.

Wow just gotta say this is me too. Good on ya mate!

I'm neither optimistic or pessimistic these days. I'm more realistic.

My positivity changes with my mood. When I'm happy, I'm positive, but a lot of the time I also get down on myself and negative.
