The trick probably lies in the fact that few people would dare to call a large group stupid to their faces, especially if they don't appear willing to reason about your disagreement and would just take it as an insult and respond with physical aggression. In this scenario, it can be argued that it's cowardly to disagree behind their backs if you wouldn't have the guts to express your disagreement in front of them.
