Thanks to littlebopeep and Diva for explaining some things to me. I'm feeling much more calm now about this whole ridiculousness.

Quote:

I can tell you (collective you) that many parents are very inspired by what Amanda has to say. I know a lot of parents online and in RL, and most do not participate in the AutismSpeaks board (or the bio-med haven AutismWeb, either.) Most parents are not bio-med gung ho and pretty much all are pro-cure because that is all they read about. But many, many, if not the great majority, of parents I know of have great admiration for Amanda for sticking her neck out and saying what she says. Most parents I observe and know take great comfort in her very presence. Most, after becoming more familiar with her life and her writing, open up to the realization that autism is not a curse, but a very different way of thinking and perceiving the world.

People who bristle at her mere presence are much more likely to openly and strongly respond when they see any evidence of her. That's why you get some nasty reaction to even a link to her words. But most of your run-of-the-mill parents, who have little idea that autism politics even exist, have very positive reactions to her.

Thanks for telling me that, that's really good to hear. You're absolutely right to point out that the AS boards don't necessarily reflect the point of view of all parents. I'm glad to hear that Amanda's message is being heard.

Oh, absolutely. Most parents (according to my own personal parent radar) are thrilled to e-meet her. She shatters the notion that one's autistic child is "locked up" and living in his own world or "stolen away" by autism. Her very being says that even if a young child cannot perceptibly respond much to you, he can be very aware of you and be trying to communicate in his own way. She has a lot of other, much more detailed and varied aspects of autism to discuss, but this is at the heart of the emotional response to her, I believe. For the great majority of parents, she is a mind blowing reassurance - and most of these parents do not go around looking for forums on which to post their thoughts. Parents who are very rooted in a cure orientation have a lot of cognitive discord with her and so they have much a more driving need to write publicly about it.

So aside from these various discussions on their boards, have there been any attempts to change the viewpoints of the people running autism speaks? Obviously the outcry and petitions against the billboards had an impact--was anything similar tried against the "autism everywhere" video? I see all these causes on Facebook to benefit autism speaks and know several autism researchers that are getting funding from them so wasn't sure if maybe there was a more supportive group that could be publicized that will do more good.

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME...

I despise him FAR more than Autism Diva" does...

Heh, looks like I'll be given a bit of trouble when I become a filmmaker then!

Oh do tell, KBABZ! Are you on You Tube? I'll point a beaut out to you if it's still there!

I only have one film, Lurk. I wasn't happy with it, so search Lurk Remastered to get my version of it. It'sa Horror Short!

I plan to make films of my following to-be nooks too:

Outcast Prologue
The Outcast Saga
Desti-Quest
Willing to Do

And various other game-to-movie films such as Kingdom Hearts, Jak and Daxter, and maybe Burnout would be a good one too! Oh, and LocoRoco, so I have a kid's film under my belt! May make a feature-length version of Lurk someday too! I still have the original footage!

Here's your "competition".

The sarcasm just drips off this piece of brilliance! I have an award on my website called "Brain of the Month" - and this video got it's creator the award for August.

Click this.

Foresam was in fact John Best.
I'd call that an end to the speculation.

And well you should be!! :D

Feel free to aggravate him more than I do. If you'd like to be his number one target, I won't fight you for the spot.

Yes, the gossip in me is dying to know who you are talking about!

The scary person on the AS board is a cyber stalker. Like I said on my other post, I'm afraid of her. No joke. And if an person is buddies with John Best, what does that say about him or her? Really, what does that say about that person? Spydee tried to be his friend and ended up cutting him loose, as far as I can tell. Now she says what I say about him, that he has multiple IDs on the AS board. John has made specific death threats against people he doesn't like on his blog. I don't see why anyone would want to call him their friend unless they approved of such things. :?: :?:

Also:
If someone from the AS board joins this board and threatens you with a private message here, don't be afraid to tell Alex. This person has seriously threatened people who are members of this board. Some people are too afraid to discuss the threats because the person in question is a cyber stalker, otherwise they might give the details here openly. It's probably smart to be afraid of this person. Sorry I can't be more specific. If this person threatens you and you need to turn the threat into the police I have one or two of these cyber stalker persons' contact information that you can share with the police.

If anyone threatens you with a private message, or in any other way, here, don't be afraid to tell any one of the mods.

PS. The JB/foresam/YouTube thing... I found it interesting that he says "... I offered to put the profits from Cafe Press towards curing ...". I suppose that means that, at present, he just loses the profits, betting on horses.

PPS. Incidentally, where is his blog? Not that I'm thrilled with the idea of seeing it, but I'm not sure that many people here on WP have the slightest idea what you are talking about. I guess that that lack of knowledge is indicative of this being a successful support site.

I'd rather not link to it directly.

Just search for "hating autism" in Google or whatever search engine you prefer. It will most likely be the top link.

I don't feel like going through 17 pages to find out if this has been addressed before, but I have to ask because it baffles me:

Why does everyone here seem to hate Autism Speaks so much? They're a successful organization with a good cause, and I don't understand why people are getting so nasty with these slogans. Can someone explain this to me?

A few reasons:

-Their "cause" is to "cure" autism even though most people on the spectrum don't want a cure. Another part of their "cause" may be to prevent autism through eugenics.
-They claim to speak for autism but have no autistic people in positions of power.
-They promote the "autism as tragedy" narrative which many of us dislike. Our existence should not be viewed as tragic.

My only real problem with them is that they're ignorant of autistic adults.
