The Fly . Cronenberg version. Cronenberg is yet to fail.

I love them, although I often end up sympathising with the 'monster'. All the ditsy female screaming and panic drives me mad and I love it when one of them ends up in pieces. I had a lot of sympathy for the Blair Witch.

Other favourites include The Shining, The Ring, Scream, 28 Days Later, The Wicker Man (original version). After I'd seen The Ring I rang up a few of my friends who had also seen it and whispered 'seven days' just to hear them inhale sharply - hilarious

Torture porn gets tedious (stuff like Saw and Hostel) although Texas Chainsaw Massacre is great.

Not sure if he classes as a horror director but I usually enjoy M Night Shyamalan's films, especially Sixth Sense, The Village and Signs.

I too love those films, The Others is a great film also.

Though not supernatural in anyway, I think the Shawshank Redemption has the best twist/ending of any film I have ever seen.

Totally agree - I did intially include The Others in my post but removed it as I wasn't sure if it was a horror film. It's another one I can watch again and again.

I don't like gory movies (e.g., Saw, Hostel). I like scifi, fantasy, and some comedy. Thrillers are ok, as long as the plot is good.

The gore doesn't really upset me, it's the anticipation of it that I can't stand. I usually spend half the movie with my eyes covered and ears plugged; makes it kinda pointless for me to watch them.

For some reason though, I love haunted houses.

I love horror movies. My favourites are The Exorcist (best film ever IMO), The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Scream II, My Little Eye, The Shining, The Bone Collector, ... I don't like gore though so I am not a fan of films like Saw or Hostel.

I don't consider Saw to be torture porn- it has a rather original storyline, for one thing, unlike Hostel or Cabin Fever. I think the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is worse than Saw as far as random gore goes. Then again, I'm not a big fan of the "OMG INBRED HILLBILLIES! RUN AWAIII!" strain of horror films.

I prefer eerieness to gore, (that means I choose things like The Grudge and The Shining over Saw any day) however, the only gory film to have really disturbed me was Cabin Fever.

I agree with some people in this thread, though, Silence of the Lambs is one of the best.

I prefer horror books for the most part. They are usually much better.

I adore vampire movies and all vampire genre. I have Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) fantasies - very sexy. On that note, here's something very special for all of you - Happy Halloween! ENJOY.......

1. When it appears that you have killed the monster, ALWAYS check to see if it's really dead.

2. Never read a book of demon summoning aloud, even on a dare.

3. Do not search the basement, especially if the power has gone out. Do not run upstairs to get away from the monster, because you’re going to be trapped.

4. If your children speak to you in Latin or any other language which they should not know, shoot them immediately. It will save you a lot of grief in the long run. However, it will probably take several rounds to kill them, so be prepared. This also applies to kids who speak with somebody else's voice.

5. As a general rule, don't solve puzzles that open portals to Hell.

6. Never stand in, on, or above a grave, tomb, or crypt. This would apply to any other house of the dead as well.

7. If appliances start operating by themselves, do not check for short circuits; just get out.

8. Do not take ANYTHING from the dead.

9. If you find a town which looks deserted, there's probably a good reason for it. Don't stop and look around.

10. If you're running from the monster, expect to trip or fall down at least twice, more if you are female. Also note that, despite the fact that you are running and the monster is merely shambling along, it's still moving fast enough to catch up with you.

11. If your companions suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior such as hissing, fascination for blood, glowing eyes, increasing hairiness, and so on, kill them immediately.

12. Stay away from certain geographical locations, some of which are listed here: Amityville, Elm Street, Transylvania, anywhere in Texas where chainsaws are sold, the Bermuda Triangle, or any small town in Maine.

13. If your car runs out of gas at night on a lonely road, do not go to the nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help. If you think that it is strange you ran out of gas because you thought you had most of a tank, shoot yourself instead. You are going to die anyway, and most likely be eaten.

14. Beware of strangers bearing tools. For example: chainsaws, staple guns, hedge trimmers, electric carving knives, combines, lawnmowers, butane torches, soldering irons, band saws, or any devices made from deceased companions.

15. Dress appropriately. When investigating a noise downstairs in an old house, women should not wear a flimsy negligee. And carry a flashlight, not a candle.

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Lol, LabPet, that list is brilliant! As for horror movies, I tend to get bored with them, although I do occasionally enjoy watching horror comedies such as Severance and Shaun of the Dead. :) I am quite squeamish as well, although I think seeing Pan's Labyrinth has somewhat desensitized me to gore. :P (After all this time, I still can't watch it without a cushion to hide behind... )

As a kid I loved them. Now I just find them painfully predictable and lame. Some are just too twisted and warped. I don't seek them out.

I love good horror movies. Not stuff like Saw and ect. I don't have a problem with gore but that cant support the whole movie. Gotta have some story and originality.

The ending of Cabin Fever was lol though. I don't want to give anything away, but if you've seen the film I'm sure you know what I'm getting at.

You might like the film Imprint by Takashi Miike from the Masters of Horror series. I want to warn you there is a rather graphic torture scene. It doesn't bother me as long as I know the torture is fake, but it is something most people can't stand. There is a huge twist in the film, I don't want to give away. However, once you see the twist, you understand the motives of the main character much better. It also is something where you realize the main character is something of a freak, and is very isolated and misunderstood, alot like someone who is neurodiverse.

If you see the film tell me what you think of the twist. When I first saw it I was all, "8O OMG that explains everything! Yet it's so sad!"

Also the film deals with abortion, as in actual images of unborn fetuses. Nothing graphic, like you'd see at a anti-abortion protest. It's just, I know that might go against some people's belifes. Actually, it has been theorized that the reason the film was banned off the TV series Masters of Horrors, and sent straight to DVD, was because of the graphic detailing of abortion. Most people would think it was the torture scene.

Thanks a lot for the recommendation. I'll definitely go look this up. :D
