Well said. Voltaire said that common sense is uncommon. The vaccine claim simply won't die for a variety of reasons too tedious to detail, but the vitamin D claim is new to me. Even though the DRI for vit. D has been revised several times in the past decade, I've seen no literature linking a vit. D insufficiency to developmental disorders. Few people have a frank vit. D deficiency, but many, particularly at higher latitudes, may have an insufficiency. Supplementation may help such people. But that has nothing to do with autism or Asperger's in small children.

Did the blog entry happen to mention what form of vitamin D (D1, D3, etc.) was used? Just curious, and have a penchant for detail.

D3 is the most healthy and most complete form of D. D3 can only be manufactured in the body of animals, so you can only get it by making it yourself or by consuming an animal source of D3. D2 comes from plants. it's better than no D at all, but not as complete of a form of D as D3. D3 is more effective.

i have absolutely no idea how accurate the vitamin D theory is in relation to autism. I've also heard something similar related to introversion.

Like the gluten-free thing, I say just try it. Maybe it is possible that Vitamin D symptoms for _some people_ can match Autistic symptoms.

Especially if dealing with an adult or older kid - try it for a couple weeks. What is it going to hurt? If you see improvement... then great.

It is these 'blanket THIS IS THE CAUSE' proclamations that are nonsense. If you read here, you will find out how often AS is misdiagnosed... so it pretty easy to see the problems you can run into.

Best substantive thoughts on this thread, IMHO. The blanket statements are tiresome, but at the same time, my anxiety and irritability from AS is helped a LOT by regular early morning sunshine. I can say the same for exercise, low-carb diets (GF/CF to boot), sleeping more than most people do, controlling stress, etc.
