Do you think it's rude to ask if someone has autism?

It really depends upon the person asking if I have autism/AS and the context and reasons that the person would like to know.

If a person has a relative or friend that is on the spectrum, or a person picks up on it with no ill intentions then I will discuss it with them. If a person brings it up with the intentions of teasing or mocking me, then I am less open about it.

I have always thought that honesty and openess about it is the best policy with most people.

The other day I was waiting to have a prescription filled, and there was a woman waiting with her two sons, who were about 5 and 2. The big one was playing with Legos, building something or other, but the little one was just making a tall stack of Legos. Then the woman's name was called, and she got up... her older son followed her but she had to call three times to the little one... "Josh? Josh! JOSH!"
