I've always had my own imaginary world which I retreat to for my own entertainment. I felt closest to this world during my childhood/adolescence and during times of emotional distress. Now I don't retreat to my world as often or as intensely as I used to, but it's still very important to me.

My world is inhabited by all sorts of Japanese anime characters whom I've grown to love over the years. I enjoy imagining them in romantic relationships with each other, and if I'm particularly fond of a pairing I'll imagine them having children together. Yes... even if both parents are the same-sex, which is extremely common in my world since I'm a fan of yaoi and yuri. Therefore, most of my time spent in my world is focused on these relationships. But if I don't feel like thinking about the relationships, I'll make 'music videos' in my head with them while I listen to music.

I don't know if this is still relevant to the topic or not, but I had imaginary friends from the time I was 5 until a little after I turned 19. The reason for having them during my adolescence was because it was mainly a coping mechanism for loneliness yet unwillingness to trust anyone in the real world. Although my imaginary world is still populated by the characters I love, I rarely, if ever, interact with them personally anymore. Now I feel more like a "fly on the wall/Big Brother", metaphorically speaking - I just prefer to "observe" them and record the ideas they give me through writing or (more commonly) drawing. I'm not sure, but I think this is the way that many other writers and artists get their inspiration.

I often go into my own world. It's kinda weird but it can help me when I need to be on my own. :) It's full of "cartoons" and stuff!

I often go in my own world alot of the times especially when i'm very bored and not kept occupied.... My world is like a computer games, cartoons and anime... But also I have alot of imaginations so half the time for me, it would be hard for me to snap out of it.

Same here, and I cannot even fathom the idea of "To what extent have you been?"

I'm not usually interested in conversations around me. Being in my own world is much more fascinating. It's better. Plus, I get to make the decisions. I usually retire into my own world during meetings at work.

I think you're referring to daydreaming.

I try to keep track of what is going on in my conversations. But sometimes, it doesn't really relate to me, and when I'm bored, I like to be in my own world.

If i hear my name mentioned i can come out of what i'm doing, check who's speaking and already know what they've been talking about and why my name was mentioned.

From another point of view, i can be fully aware of people around me and their conversations yet completely jump out of my skin when someone stands next to me and asks me something.

It doesn't seem to make sence. The closest i get to explaining is it that becuase i don't actually *care* about the things going on, my hard drive is recording it but my processor (which is very single core, i don't multi task at all well) isn't using any resource on it, then when a code word is recognised (my name for example), it's shocked into quickly switching it's workload, checking the hard disk for relevent info and processing an appropriate reaction.

And i have a feeling that was a horribly aspie explaination, and possibly not really the desired direction of the thread.

Actually I think that is the perfect description...I have the same thing happen to me.

I live in my own world numerous times a week. I sometimes fantasize that I designed a massive videogame, wrote a great novel or was living a successful life. I can be anything from an actor to a baseball player. Of course I also have romantic fantasies by thinking about being with the perfect girl. I'll admit at times my fantasies can be a bit narcissistic but again they are only fantasies so no harm done I suppose.

Yes, my mother used to worry about me being in my own little world.

I am still like that. At work I just work away at whatever I'm doing and I'm not really aware of what goes on around me. I caught the tail end of a conversation the other day and one of my colleagues said, "she always ignores you doesn't she?" I looked up and realised he was talking about me. I don't do it deliberately. I just get very focussed on what I'm doing.

Not at school where I have things I should be doing and people understand me. I do this most at parties, where people don't interest me. It is like white noise around me, while I sometimes read a book and go into that world. Or I go into my own world.

I feel more like others are in their own world, blind to reality.

People call us faceblind or mindblind, I often wonder if they're not realityblind?

Sometimes, moreso when I was younger, esp. in my teens. I think a lot of it is related to boredom on the one hand and ironically overstimulation on the other. Either way its an escape valve, right? These days I try to stay as engaged as I can, my job kind of depends on it.

I spend a lot of time "up in my attic". But when I am there mostly I pay attention to what is going on outside my skin. I do not introspect much or deeply.

I am totally in my world sometimes. More so when I was younger, I used to "play" movies in my head just to keep
from getting bored.
