The same thing happened with me! I climbed everything when I was little and then around like 12 or so, I became petrified but there was no real reason for the change. I get scared on escalators too, I have to hold on TIGHT lol I was even a little scared on the Empire State Building even though there is no way I'd fall off with those walls on the roof.

It was the same when I was a kid sorta fearless climbing everything going out the window climbing up onto the roof then like you at about 12 it just didn't seem right anymore I felt like I was going to fall.

Sorry, but fears like heights are a normal human thing.

It depends. If you have to jump over a rock crevice 300 feet deep, knowing that if you slip, you'll die, then a fear is a very healthy thing. If you are standing perfectly safe on a balcony and and hold on to the guard rail in horror, then this is not normal at all. Most people have no problem standing on a balcony.

When I was underemployed for a while I'd help out my housemate who's a signwriter. This involved getting up on ladders and walking around on shop awnings, not something I'm entirely comfortable with...but I found that I got used to it in a way that I don't do with other things. The only problem that I had was coming down the ladder, my physical co-ordination is bad so stepping off that ledge and getting a firm foothold on the ladder scares the s**t out of me.

I remember meeting a guy who was a high-rise window cleaner. I asked him how he could work strapped up like that at 50 storeys...he told me that once you get past the tenth floor, it makes no difference to the outcome if you fall...8O

Heh, yeah.....splat.

I once concussed myself by falling two metres, landing on my head on concrete. Probably fractured my skull as there is still a lump on my head, but I never went to the doctor to find out.
I have no depth perception and no fear of heights, maybe because everything looks flat anyway. I went bungee jumping once, but never again. Don't somehow think it's natural to fall that far and not die at the end of it...

8O 8O ooowwwwchh.......

Never tried the bungee thingee...I don't see the point in jumping off a perfectly good bridge/tower/whatever. Same thing goes for skydiving...I'd only jump out of a plane if it was going to crash.

I grew up on a farm, and we used to have these straw bales. Each one was about 6 foot high, and they were stacked 3 bales high. We used to jump off them unto a pile of straw on the ground (once my brother kinda missed the straw and hit the ground head first).
I'm actually terrified of hights tho, it was always really hard to jump. Plus one time when I went to England there was this castle with a really high tower, I started panicing about half way up the steps. Same thing happened when I was climbing the Eiffel tower

I am afraid of heights, but I don't think it's because I specifically have AS.

I'm not the fondest person of heights, i don't mind flying or the scary rides at theme parks but if i have to climb high, even on a ladder, it makes me shake and i freeze. this was particularly embaressing when i was doing a charity event that envolved climbing a ladder attached to a pole with climbing harness and ropes and everything, and i froze halfway up couldn't go up or down for about 15mins untill and instructer climbed up to get me

I don't like heights nor small spaces. I'm scared of the dark, and I hate being in rooms with white walls. I hate things that go bump in the night. But heights has been my biggest fear. I'm scared of elevators and escalators. I hate the feeling I get. However I've always wanted to fly in an airplane oddly enough. And I'm a roller-coaster junky.

I think it might have something to do with having become aware of mortality - that is, that we don't exactly bounce like in the cartoons - that changed my comfort level with heights. I wonder, since several people mention that happening around 12, if that's some sort of developmental milestone in a child's development?

I am nervous of heights but it isnt helped by my brother and dad who take the mickey out of me for my fears.
They think that they are irrational and i am making them up but i am not they are very real to me and it can be scary.
