I can't eat sugar or simple carbs on an empty stomach or I feel ill immediately. So can only eat sweets as dessert.

I'm better when I don't take sugars, or grains for that matter. Dairy is another one. I feel better when I limit it. Kinda restrictive though. I like my fruit and honey, I don't feel they have anything like the effects of refined sugar, though.

Cleaning up my diet did wonders for all sorts of my problems. Skin, mood, sleep, concentration, energy...

The Paleo diet seems very expensive, since it has a lot of meat. Is that the case, Psychohist? Do you find yourself needing to eat less on that diet?

If you've dropped grains and dairy, you're pretty close to paleo already. Your benefits sound just like the benefits most people get on paleo as well.

The paleolithic diet does emphasize meat, but most of the people I know who are on it do not follow Cordain's low fat version. Fatty meat is higher in calories so I don't have to eat as much. High fat ground beef also tends to be quite inexpensive in the U.S.

For the calories, the fruit and vegetables are at least as expensive as the meat. I do get by on about 1200-1600 kcal per day (140 lb 5'11"), which seems to be less than most people on a nonpaleo diet.

Thanks for the info! I haven't entirely dropped grains, damn things are as addictive as crack. :x

I tend to eat a lot of nuts, seeds and legumes instead of meat. The thing about fatty meat is interesting. The media tells us to stop eating fat, but since I started eating full fat versions of things, I feel much better. If I do dairy (and I do sometimes, but I process it into kefir) I get full fat milk for example.

Do you ever eat raw meat? I know some paleo dudes do.

I eat a lot of nuts - mostly walnuts because I try to watch my omega 3:6 ratio. I do also spring for grass fed ground beef for the omega 3s, though for more expensive cuts I don't go for the grass fed. I do avoid legumes because they are not paleo; peanuts and peanut oil in particular are high in omega 6s. It sounds like the legumes are the main difference between what you do and paleo.

I personally do not eat meat raw, though I know some who do; cooking is allowed on the paleo diet. I do have my steaks very rare, which is essentially raw in the middle.

Ok I'm just going to give you the facts, no opinions.

I've been off sugar for about 3 weeks now.

I do feel more relaxed in social situations.

I've been saying hi to more people and smiling more

I've been talking to people more on facebook, without being nervous about what other reading will think

I don't necessarily feel like I have more energy, but I've been having less shutdowns.

I did shut down for two days last week, I didn't talk to anyone because I was sick of them. I've had less shutdowns, not none.

I did go through a phase in the middle where I was more irritable, because of cravings.

Those are the facts, now for my opinion. It could be a coincidence, or a rouse. It could be like taking a placebo to feel better from a cold. Either way, I guess we'll find out when I eat sugar again, though now I'm reluctant to. This could even prove that it's all a state of mind for me and I can do anything if I put my mind to it, including socializing.

The sugar gave you autism! (sarcasm)

With respect to the Pepsi vs. Coke thread, in the United States almost all soft drinks are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, not sugar. Very very bad stuff. It makes me feel a little ill.

Sugar itself, fine, great. No effect at all.

And I never liked chocolate.
That's odd... do you get sick from fruit, too?

I get ill from soft drinks. The only soft drink I can have without feeling ill is lemonade. Anything with aspartame, like Coke Zero can make me instantly ill. I can't do sweeteners.
I get ill from eating oranges too. Even a little lemon in my drink can make me ill.

I don't restrict food groups, so I get a bit weirded out when people talk about having no sugar or carbs. I like the kick a bit of sugar gives me when I'm run down, but I know not to overdo it.

Sugars and high fructose corn syrup have no effects on me. Same with caffeine. I drank two Monsters today and and don't feel anything.

Actually, fruit contains a LOT of fructose. That's why it's called "Fructose". It's fruit sugar.

Foods highest in fructose

As expected, this list puts soda at the top--quickly followed by various sorts of fruits and fruit juices.

Nope, it doesn't affect me in any way i'm afraid, yet it does after a while keep me awake after a few minutes and then back to being exhausted again...

Caffeine, well that's a different story...

In earlier years I ran on sugar... no I do better with reduced sugar, but grains. Sometimes chocolate and cake, but the amounts are nothing compared to the amounts I ate before (cake for breakfast etc. ...).

A bit is fine for me and helps me stand the day. For emergency case I have a small sweet always with me. I never drink sugar in tea or coffee, don´t like soft drinks, so it´s fine for me.
And I have one day per week "Decadence day" :D

But I hate sweetener. The effect, the bitter aftertaste, everything. I get hungry from it, my system thinks it gets sugar, gets none and drives mad.

ToughDiamond, by all accounts fructose sugar is actually very bad for you. The only people I can find with good things to say about it, are fast food and soft drink manufacturers.

Interesting.......if I remember my biochemistry lessons right, fructose is one of the two components of common table sugar (the other one being glucose). An alternative name for fructose is "fruit sugar" because it's commonly abundant in fruit. Yet fruit is almost universally acclaimed as a wonderfully healthy thing to eat. :? I suppose this might be an issue that the "wholefood" philosophy is relevent to - there's a big difference between eating a whole, natural food that contains a substance, and eating a synthetic or purified version of that substance.

I quite agree.

Why? Is it a different chemical when it's found naturally?

In some cases it probably is, but I suspect the complete answer is more complicated......first instance I saw was the use of iron tablets cf. foods that naturally contain iron. If I remember right, they found that the intestines needed additional substances in order to absorb the iron into the body, and those substances tended to be found in iron-rich foods. The underlying problem may be that humans have evolved to work optimally by eating natural foods, and our bodies haven't had the time to adapt to the very recent technology that allows us to refine foods and extract their so-called active constituents.

That's not to say that natural products are always better than purified pills.....I'm pretty sure that pure nicotine is a lot safer than tobacco, for example. Even without the "technology" of fire, just chewing tobacco can cause cancer of the mouth and throat.

too much of anything is dangerous

I'm getting ready to go off sugar for awhile. I noticed major improvements in myself when I went off gluten. I've recently slipped up on that and need to get back on track with it.
