Not a bloody chance...just let me be, and live my life in peace. I am not sick. I'd rather be sweet and handicapped, than one of them normal, hurtful types.

this sounds like it could be a question about wanting a different life versus keeping your present one, so i would have to say i certainly wouldn't turn down another life as a popular gorgeous adult movie star with a bevy of sexies to call my own, an adroit social life and being rich and famous and all that.
this said, the road less travelled has important mile post lessons that i would not have learnt if i were to have been able to take the normal road. i believe i would take the "cure" at my present age and have the best of both worlds- hard-won wisdom and compassion from growing up and old as an aspie, and the ability to interact in the outer world more effectively. my younger self would have slavered at such a cure and would have begged, borrowed and stolen in order to get it, and would have lost something irreplaceable. but now i am ready for a cure. anytime now. just waiting for it.

I love mine, keep me from having to associate with no0bs or be "fake"

You do know that noob means newbie, as in someone just starting out? We were all noobs on this forum at some point. Noobs and fakes are nothing alike.

And whether or not you are one or associate with them has nothing to do with being on the spectrum.

no0b can be used three ways

Explain.

No please explain?

I voted no. I have some challenges, but NT life is not all hunkydory either. I'd post some links, but there's no need, people know from their own experience. I'd rather be me than someone else, all things considered. I'm sweet.

Being NT is not such a piece of cake  There are millions of unhappy and f****d up NTs out there.

Great post. At the moment I think I'd do anything to be NT. But there are good things that have come from my AS.

This isn't a question of whether you ever had AS or not, it's about if you could take a pill now and rid yourself of all your AS symptoms. So you would not be changing who you are, you're already you. Just any of things you find challenging because of your AS would become easier, though as an NT you would still have the choice not to participate in situations or participate with people you don't feel comfortable with.

Ok sure, but how do you know that if you could fit in you wouldn't want to? I'm not saying you would want to, you might hate it. But you can't say you know.

And like I said up above, as an NT you have the choise to fit in or not, but at least it's a choice and not a lifestyle forced upon you because of a brain disorder (I know that makes it sound negative, but for the sake of making some sort of point I think I need to be blunt...??).

I can see what people are like. I don't want it. There's no point in having an option you're not going to take, especially not with the cost.

I don't know, I still don't think basing your identity on a label is a good thing. Like pensieve mentioned, if AS is removed from the DSM alot of people may feel they've lost their sense of self. It's a real issue and there's nothing positive about it.

Other than that, to a certain extent, it also means you have no real control over who you are Who you are is being dictated by whatever you believe AS to be.

That's not what I meant. I am who I am regardless of what label you put on me, but it so happens that several of them fit me. AS describes part of me, just like being a girl describes part of me. Neither of them define me.

Not all 'normal' people are hurtful and not all disabled people are nice.

To be honest I wouldn't mind 'trying on NT' for a day just to see what it's like. However I don't think I would like to be that way forever. I've had AS for my whole life, I wouldn't know how to be myself if my whole thought process was different.

You know that sentence is quite prejudice. The vast majority of "normals" are not hurtful. And there are variations in personality in both "handicapped" and "normal" individuals, there are sweet and hurtful people on both sides.

I consider my self fortunate to have the Gift, but not so extreme that it has disabled me. I would not change, even if I could.

Hmmmm...I can't answer a simple yes or no. If I could "cure" the things about AS that make me miserable, while leaving those things that actually either (a) help me to be better at those things I have interests in or (b) are such an integral part of who I am that I wouldn't know how to "be me" without, I'd opt for that. If it's just "all or nothing" I'd have to vote no because I'd be afraid of losing some things that are functional for me.

As long as it wasn't permanent. There are certain social situations where I wish I could act more NT but I feel being aspie-ish has given me a creative gift and I wouldn't totally want to give that up.

Hell no. Yeah my life is hard sometimes but I love the fact that I can think differently from NT's.

So... I voted YES... but! with one exception... my boyfriend would have never existed.
[Boyfriend has AS and is my copy... couldn't be that way if I changed to NT]

Now, with that exception...
I assume that if I were to change to NT I would have more friends... be able to express myself... the world wouldn't be such a mystery... and I would not feel so completely lonely.

I don't know who I am so I can't imagine missing me...
I think changing to NT would lessen anxiety and allow me to just "flow" with life a bit more.

Those are my reasons :)
